Wednesday on Oprah - 5 Former Talk Show Hosts

Wednesday on The Oprah Show 5 Former Talk Show Hosts - Donahue, Sally, Ricki, Geraldo, and Monetel. Coolness.

This is pretty cool, but what about the other two huge days Oprah's had this week so far? Katharine and Joe Jackson on Monday, and GW Bush today.
She's really going out with a bang!

And she had the recent "The Sound of Music" reunion (Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer, and the 7 actors who played the von Trapp children had not been together for an interview since the movie was released), plus Oprah hasn't done her annual 'favorite things' giveaway-o-rama yet this season.

Hopefully there will be a YouTube sample, as I will miss the airing today.

Let me guess... a tease for a brand new OWN reality show?

Don't think so. The ex-hosts have done well for themselves since leaving the talk TV airwaves. Plus this is sweeps month, so expect the surprises to keep coming.

Wow! Its surprising to see Ricki Lake on "Oprah." Go Ricki!

BTW where was Jenny?

Good question, she is missing.

She has a website:
http://www.jennyjones.com/ and has guest starred on The View, after her show ended, but maybe not recently.

Jenny's show also used to be taped in Chicago. My guess is she declined.

So would the interview with Oprah convince Kanye West that Bush doesn't hate black people?

I didn't see the interview, but hopefully Oprah explained to Bush that Kanye was simply expressing his extreme frustration at Bush's seeming lack of response to the Katrina disaster in New Orleans.

The show was really great! Definitely one for the archives.

Which now begs the question -- was there a station out there, anywhere, that carried ALL SIX (Oprah, Donahue, Ricki, Sally, Montel and Geraldo) at one time?? Or how about FIVE of the six?? Or FOUR of the six??

Start with Milwaukee:
WTMJ: Oprah, Donahue, Sally, Montell
WITI: Donahue, Sally, Ricki, Geraldo and Montell
WISN: Oprah, Ricki, Geraldo
WVTV: Ricki, Geraldo
WCGV: Ricki, Montell
WDJT: Donahue, Sally, Montell, Ricki

From what I could tell, that's exactly what Oprah was trying to explain. Happily, she didn't attempt to condone Kanye's stupidity.

I don't think she was satisfied with Bush's answer though. He still seems to be quite arrogant
and out-the-loop as far as most americans concerns.

Here in Charleston, the shows were on different stations.

WCBD has had Oprah for every season except the first, Sally aired there forever, and Montel aired there toward the end.

WCIV- Donahue (in the mid 80s and until 1994), Montel, Oprah (86-87), Sally,

WCSC- Geraldo (in the 80s), Montel (for a long period was the lead-in to the 6 news), and others.

Ricki Lake generally aired on WTAT, and Geraldo also aired on WCTP (now WMMP).

It's a very complicated picture that would take hours to decode.

At one point, Oprah was rubbing it in that she remained #1 during all of their runs when they competed against her. But she said, there were short periods when one of them beat her show in ratings. For Oprah, the purpose has to come back down to her.

Montel seemed a bit angry against celebrities that have stopped supporting the troops.
Actually, I'm not sure of the purpose of the show, besides ratings. It seemed Oprah wanted their perspectives of how it is like after leaving the job.
But Sally was cancelled - she didn't leave the air voluntarily, Donahue to some extent also. Oprah will still be busy with her cable network, so it wasn't that similar.

On your question:
I think there was a short time when WPVI aired
9am Donahue
10am AM Philadelphia
10:30 Sally Jessy Raphael
11:30 Home (1st 1/2 half only)

4:00 Oprah

12:05am Jenny Jones
1:05am Ricki Lake

WPVI later dropped Donahue and Sally, at the time those shows were losing popularity, and KYW picked the 2 talk shows. WPVI upgraded Jenny and Ricki to AM positions respectively, Jenny at 9, Ricki at 10:30.

The following year Rosie O'Donnell show was picked up, which replaced the Carnie Wilson show (which never aired on WPVI), and the next year, Regis & Kathie Lee moved from WCAU to WPVI. Within a couple of years, WPVI and WABC had the exact AM lineups.

Jenny moved to Channel 17, Ricki to WTXF 29. WPHL's daytime format went from Gilligan's Island reruns to a Jenny/Jerry Springer format. When WTXF picked up Ricki Lake, it was advertised "Ricki Rocks Fox" and Ricki aired at 5pm, similar to WWOR's UPN 9 slot, her flagship outlet. However, 29 didn't keep Ricki at 5pm for some reason very long.

My memory was incorrect. WPVI didn't have all 5 shows (Donahue, Sally, Oprah, Jenny and Ricki) at the same time. It did replace Donahue and Sally, with Jenny and Ricki, when Donahue and Sally were fading. To make room for Rosie, Ricki was moved after midnight. This replaced the "Million Dollar Movie".

Both WPVI and WABC used to air a movie after Nightline. It wasn't the same movie aired on WPVI and WABC though. WPVI had to cease airing movies to accomodate the situation of airing Rosie in the daytime (as Rosie came off very strong in other markets), thus Ricki was bumped, and a Ricki and Jenny rerun aired after Nightline.

Jenny and Ricki along with AM/Philadelphia, were ultimately replaced by Regis, Rosie and The View.

On Oprah's show, it was nice to see Donahue honored. I also think Ricki could do well coming back to daytime or network tv.

To answer my own question, from a NYC viewpoint, it never happened.

Donahue was carried on three stations here, and was on WNBC-TV the longest -- c. 1976 through '95. The final season was not aired in New York, save for Donahue's last week of shows in late April/Early May 1996.

Sally was on WNBC (twice) and WABC-TV, where her show was stretched from 30 to 60 minutes in the fall of '89 (IIRC).

Ricki Lake was on WWOR-TV for her entire 11-year run. After WWOR was bought by Fox, WNYW carried a second run of Ricki for a while.

Geraldo was on four stations here -- WWOR, WNBC, WCBS-TV (twice) and WPIX.

Montel was carried over WCBS-TV, WNYW and WWOR (not necessarily in that order, but two stints each).

While none of the stations fit the criteria for my question, there was a time when three of them competed with each other. For a few years in the late '80s and early '90s, Oprah (on Ch. 7), Donahue (Ch. 4) and Geraldo (Ch. 2) were all on at 4:00 PM. And I think Montel and Ricki went head-to-head on Chs. 5 and 9 at 5:00 PM, years before the two became sister stations.

Here in Hartford-New Haven Donahue was always on WTNH Channel 8 and when Channel 8 launched WTVU-59 in 1995 they aired same day repeat in primetime.

Sally started on WTNH. Her show was even filmed at Channel 8 for a few years. Then she moved over to WVIT Channel 30 for a couple years. Then moved back to Channel 8. Once again same day repeat aired on WTVU in Primetime. For the last 2 or 3 years Sally moved to WTIC-TV. FOX 61.

Oprah was always on WFSB Channel 3 CBS.

Montel started on WVIT Channel 30. For one year he end up on at 3AM before move to Channel 59 for the last few seasons.

Ricki started on WVIT before moving to FOX 61 for her final years.

Jenny (not on this show) started on WFSB Channel 3 and moved to FOX 61.

Geraldo was on FOX 61.

Maury (not on this show) started on WFSB. Aired one day 9/10/01 on NBC 30. Moved to FOX 61 some time after 9/11. Moved to sister station CW-20 WCCT-TV this September.

Jerry (not on this show) started at 5AM on NBC 30. Moved to FOX 61. Moved this September to sister station CW 20.
