WEED Goes AAR

Just noticed on the AAR site that WEED-AM 1390 is no longer serving Mexican? No website. Doesn't look like you can get it at ECU though.

La Ley wiped out all of the spanish AM's down here. I would say it's a shame, but La Ley is all I ever hear Mexicans listening to anyway. So apparently they made the switch.<P ID="signature">______________

I like AAR. In fact, I am listening to the stream, now. But, AAR/Liberal Talk in Rocky Mount? BUT...the call sign and the network work well together! :)

WEED was running Spanish Praise and Worship as "Radio Restauracion". I thought there may be a market for that, especially with a fairly large 'charismatic' Hispanic Church (Iglesia La Roca) in Rocky Mount.

It is amazing what an FM signal will do to any AM station. I still remember when the ratings for the Raleigh area used to carry two sometimes three Spanish AM's stations. On latest only Curtis (La Ley) is on.

No AAR on WEED this weekend

Passing through Rocky Mount this weekend, they are still playing Spanish Praise and Worship.

The callsign of WEED 1390 was not meant to allude to marijuana. Back in the day, eastern NC's main cash crop was tobacco, AKA the "golden weed". WGTM 590 in Wilson was "World's Greatest Tobacco Market" and the former WGTC in Greenville was "World's Greatest Tobacco Capitol" or something like that. When Uncle Roy came to town, the call letters were changed to WNCT, which stood for "North Carolina Tobacco".

Are there any other tobacco-related callsigns out there?

WFAG Farmville-Greenville was named for a nickname of a cigarette (I think). Plus it didn't hurt that it was Farmville AND Greenville. Obviously, the call has other connotations today.

I grew up within sight of their tower, that 500-watt signal coming from a stick barely 175 feet tall in a swampy clearing got out rather well. WFAG had local call-in shows, broadcasted Little League games, a Saturday morning show with high school kids, swap-shop programs, parades, you name it. Later they switched to the WGHB calls, upgraded to 5 KW and had plans to go AM stereo and an application for an expanded band frequency, but it never happened.

If I could raise the funds for a small FM signal to super-serve Farmville the way WFAG/WGHB used to, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Today the 1250 transmitter site is north of Farmville but otherwise it's all about Greenville where the ECU money is. Farmville needs a station of its own again.

Are there any investors reading this? Let's talk.

It seems like someone once told me WFAG branded itself...serious, now...The Big (BLEEP)! Is that true?
