WEEF moved

Drove by the WEEF transmitter site yesterday and noticed that their three towers have been dismantled. This means that they are now broadcasting from the WKTA site at the intersection of Dundee and I-294. The FCC web site still listes their move as application only.

Not much of improvement in reception for me in the western suburbs, since WGN's 2nd harmonic on 1440 puts a horrendous splash on 1430 kHz.

The Harmonics with AM IBOC are going to be really interesting. I suspect 670 is putting a lot of hiss on 1360 DeKalb WLBK. I wonder how much people hear that noise in the primary coverage area.<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by Link on 08/24/05 02:24 AM.</FONT></P>

Getting both WEEF and WKTA nice and listenable now in Kenosha. WAY better then before. I'm suprised at how well WKTA is doing up here these days.

4 out of 7 for WKTI on my signal strength meter. Average AM including WGN/WSCR/etc is 5

1-2 out of 7 for WEEF

Before I could barely get WKTA and there was no WEEF at all.<P ID="signature">______________

Technically speaking, 1440 is WGN's first harmonic. :)

On a side note... I wonder if anyone in the vicinity of O'Hare can actually make use of the TIS on 800 kHz. I've tried it on two different receivers -- A stock radio in a 2003 Altima, and a Blau Digiceiver. Whenever WBBM's IBOC signal is on the TIS is useless, even along I-190. In the evening, the TIS can actually be heard, regardless of increased skywave interference.

I wonder what other TIS's will get trounced because of IBOC. I imagine if Salem added it to WRRD Jackson-Milwaukee it would put an end to many TIS stations on 530.

It's my understanding that Salem isn't particularly IBOC friendly.
They turned it off when they took over 560.

I remember hearing that IBOC affected 540 when 560 was running IBOC. I live near the WIND towers and it was much worse to listen to any adjacent stations, unless I was several miles from the WIND towers.

IBOC stereo just didn't make any sense for a talk oriented station. Besides, as you know, it generated way to much garbage on the adjacent channels. 540 in Jackson, Wisconsin noticed an improvement immediately after the IBOC was turned off. IMHO the IBOC format for AM radio is a sorry compromise for what was originally intended.
