WEEI: Big Show Far More Listenable....

....with Ordway gone. Far less yelling and screaming at each other and a lot less talk about the nitnoid finer points of the Boston Celtics; which noboby but Ordway really cares about. Pete Shephard is actually a pretty decent lead host when he's not playing his Pete "The Big Fat Doofus" sidekick character.

I'd actually prefer it if Ordway stayed on vacation.

Yeah, Sheppard is better when he's not playing the resident oaf. He does get a little full of himself at times, though. Ordway seems to bring out the worst in everyone. Sometimes there are five(counting the caller) people yelling at once.

The morning show was unlistenable this week, however. If WEEI is big-time radio, why can't they get better substitutes than Mustard and Johnson? Once in a while I want to hear some sports news on a Saturday morning and I turn on their show. Within about ten minutes I remember why I don't listen to it. There is no way they should be on in morning drive, or even Saturdays for that matter.

With the Sox having the best record in all of baseball, and the Patriots picked for THE SUPERBOWL this year, WEEI is going to have ratings no matter what. It would be nice for Ordway to calm down because the routine has become extremely tired. I agree, keep him on vacation as long as possible. Ya think there will be Tsunami warnings when he gets into the pool?

I've actually found myself switching over the 890 ESPN when I want to hear sports talk and the Big Show turns into the big fat guys screaming at each other show. It's boring terrible radio. At least Felger lets people on the air to actually talk.

Perhaps it's time Ordway goes the way of Andelman.

Well, if you look at the Big Show demo numbers, it certainly seems to work. Business is business.

A lot of stations look at the July 4th holiday week as throwaway time, so if you're going to that, why not do it on the cheap? IIRC, Mustard was one of the original weekday hosts when they went to sports talk, and got broomed when they started tweaking the format and getting serious about ratings. He is also a school teacher, so this is the time they can use him for fill-in work when the name talent want to be on the golf course. Johnson is a long-time good soldier for them, and they like to reward him with some extra gigs, like on the Big Show. Maybe they thought pairing them up in the AM would generate some listeners to the weekend gig. This may well be a case of unintended consequences.

Why so long?

Regards,
TSB
