WEEI has AFC champ, Super Bowl

Under Dial Global contract WEEI can carry both AFC champ game and Super Bowl even if both
include Pats..we know for sure Pats are in the former. C's on 850 next Sun. NFC champ
Game, maybe 850 as C's isn't till 7:30. NFC prob over by 6 or 6:30

@bostonradio notes NFL contract w Dial Global allows DG aff. in home market to do this.
Was done last yr too.

Could be last Gil Santos call--hopefully Pats will win and he'll get to do the SB for Sports Hub. Not sure if
Pats Radio Net. affiliates would be allowed to carry the Pats Radio Network SB broadcast (should they make it).
Poss. flagship only.

That was the rule last year, wasn't it?

Yes prob true (flagship only).
In terms of baseball, World Series (but not previous playoffs) I believe the local team's broadcasts are allowed and the team's home city can also have broadcasts of the network feed if they wish
(so...if Sox make WS you could have Sox Network on 93.7 and ESPN call of games on 850?
But who knows.) Years ago World Series radio was the national network only, not local.
Harry Kalas in 1980 was prevented from calling the Phillies in the World Series. But in 2008 the
rules were different and Phillies radio could cover the Series, won by Philly.

>>(Wiki entry on Harry Kalas)
MLB radio-broadcasting regulations at the time forbade local stations from producing live coverage of World Series games, instead forcing them to air the national CBS Radio feed of the games. Philadelphia fans were so outraged about this afterward that they started a letter-writing campaign to the Commissioner's Office, demanding a change to the rule. Due at least in part to this outcry from Philadelphia fans, MLB amended its broadcasting contracts the following year to allow World Series teams' flagship radio stations to air the games with local announcers

Supposedly, Patriots Affliates could carry the pre and post game if they wanted too..but only the flagship can carry Gil and Company, which is just bizzare..The NBA and NHL don't do this, unless I'm wrong..

I also don't think Patriots' radio network affiliates were able to carry the local broadcast of yesterday's (January 13th) AFC Semifinals between the Patriots and the Houston Texans.

If the Pats make the Super Bowl, could CBS Radio Boston declare WBZ-1030 as "co-flagship" for the AFC Championship and Super Bowl XLVII (if the team makes it that far)?? This way, WBZ-AM's big signal would be able to simulcast the game and carry the Gil Santos/Scott Zolak call to most of the country (since the AFC Championship kicks-off at 6:35 P.M. EST; the Super Bowl at 6:15 P.M. EST).

CBS Radio Boston did that for Game 7 of the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals between the Bruins and the Vancouver Canucks. But there were very few affiliates for the 2010/11 Bruins' Radio Network (large parts of New England wouldn't otherwise have gotten the game on radio).

Yes, oinly the flagship can use the local broadcast...for the SB

I seem to remember that WTIC-AM 1080 of Hartford carried the Giants feed when they (*ahem!*) won Super Bowl XLVI last year. I'm certain that WPOP-AM 1410 of Hartford carried the Dial-Global Radio Network feed. I was coming back from Portland, ME and had to rely on the radio short term (WTIC-AM is a 50,000 watt clear channel).

The oddity was with the weekend here. The other three playoff games aired at the same time on both WPOP-AM (Fox Sports Radio 1410) AND WUCS-FM 97.9 of Windsor Locks/Hartford (97.9-ESPN). Due to a digital delay, 97.9 FM was 4 to 5 seconds behind that of 1410 AM. As for the Texans vs Patriots, I'll assume it was aired by WCCC-FM 106.9 (Rock) of Hartford, since they carry the regular season games (I refuse to listen to the Patriots side of the broadcast, however).

I'm pretty sure the game was carried on the usual affiliates. I know I was tuning around and heard the pre/post game on the affiliates, not 100% sure about the game but I'm sure others will confirm.

WBZ didn't carry the past Super Bowls, why would they start now?

Patriots affiliates were able to carry the AFC semifinal. From here on out, only the flagship station can carry the local PBP. The way I remember this working in the past - and it's been 10 years or so since I have had to deal with this - is that for the AFC finals and Super Bowl, WBCN would offer its pregame and postgame festivities to affiliates, but would replace their game feed with Westwood One's PBP. I would assume that, unless rules have changed, that WBZ-FM would offer the Dial-Global PBP to Patriots affiliates. I'm pretty sure that the affiliates also had to get authorization from WW1 beforehand, and that would probably be the case with DG. Not sure what happens if another station in the market already has the DG NFL contract...

I listened to the start of the Patriots game on Sunday on WXXK (Lebanon, NH). They are a member of the Patriots radio network after Great Eastern Radio moved the Patriots from sister station WMXR (now WWOD) in December.

On Saturday both WUCS 97.9 and WPOP 1410 carried the DG feeds of the two semifinals. Unfortunately, I was away from any radio during the Pats game Sunday so I have no idea if WAQY 102.1 or WCCC 106.9, or both, carried the Pats feed. Both 97.9 and 1410 are very limited signals in comparison to 102.1 and 106.9, so reception over a good part of the market would have been significantly sketchier if DG claimed exclusivity for Pats-Texans this past Sunday.

There sure seems to be a lot of conjecture and outright guessing on this thread. You'd think one of the posters here who's in the business would know the story and tell us.

You "think" or you "know"? Divisional playoff game was carried by network affilaites last Sunday.

Krafts would never allow to dilute their product by simulcasting it on AM or another FM.

Bruins were a different story with Game 7. WBZ AM carried the first Bruins game ever broadcast. If you only bothered to check the facts before posting,

AM simulcast was done strictly for sentimental reasons to honor station’s hockey history.

The reason I thought that CBS Radio Boston might want to simulcast the remaining Patriots' games on WBZ-1030 would be to allow fans in outlying parts of New England to hear Gil Santos and Scott Zolak's call since their "local" Pats' affiliate won't be able to pick-up the local Patriots Radio Network feed.

The NFC Championship Game will be heard on WEEI-850 and likely not on 93.7, based on a promo I heard on 850 this morning (January 17th).

I was surprised that 93.7 isn't carrying this game, given that the Celtics don't play until that night (it appears that 850 will carry that game), and the Boston College men's basketball team (whose games are heard on WEEI) isn't playing that day.

My guess is that WEEI wanted to do a local pre-game show prior to the network broadcast of the Patriots' AFC title game on FM, so the NFC game gets bumped to 850.

What if the NFC game goes to overtime? Put it on AM only, the FM can do Pats related

(FM)
>>12:00PM 3:00PM Pete Sheppard
3:00PM 6:00PM NFL Sunday
6:00PM 10:00PM AFC championship game: Patriots vs. Ravens

then Real Postgame Show

That's exactly what they're doing. They've been airing NFL Sunday with Dale Arnold, Chris Price, Matt Chatham and Kevin Faulk as their default pre-game all season, running from 9-12 before 1pm games (and MNF weeks) and 1-4 before 4:30 games (think they did a 4-7 show for a Sunday night game). This is something new for them made possible by splitting 850 off the simulcast. Where they once were obligated to air the Dial Global game at 1pm and had to do NFL Sunday at 9am every week, now they stick the game on 850 and stay local on 93.7 until game time.
