WEEI, inconsistent stand on pay-tv vs. pay-radio

WEEI has been running ads railing against the idea of paying for radio.

Today Dale and Holley proclaim that they think it is no huge deal that the Red Sox games on Friday nights are being moved to NESN from broadcast television.

Do they not see any connection between the two?

Personally, I think the radio spots against Sirius and XM are silly, if someone wants to pay for a better product so be it. Let WEEI beat them by offering better programming than the competition...not because radio "should" be free.

Yup, D&C's pic next to "Pay For Radio? You Can't Be Serious!" And
radio ads with Castiglione's call of the last out of '04 World
Series; then a "phone company noise" followed by "please
deposit 25 cents for the next 3 minutes" or something like that.
Then, Jim Cutler (voice of ESPN and many stations, etc.) comes in
with "Radio, you shouldn't have to pay for it"

Curly Haired Boyfriend article in NY Times Jr yesterday,
saying those too poor to afford cable are now deprived of
those Fri night Ch 38 games.

Yes...Though I'd hope the Red Sox could offer some more
free telecasts (right now the occasional Fox network
broadcast on Ch 25 will be it for OTA TV). Even the dreaded
and despised Yanks have some OTA games (via WCBS/2, i believe).
I do have cable and NESN is on it but I feel bad for those
who don't have cable--OR those who only have the bare basic
cable, which does not have NESN...oh well, can still hear them
on 'EEI.

I think if you want to promote a product, no matter what the product is, promote it as high as you can, and say how great it is, etc...but degrading the competitor and degrading their product to try to boost your own image, is just very unclassy and stupid....but then again, we are talking about decision makers at WEEI.

And by the way, I believe Mr. Arnold does play by play for some hockey
team on NESN, and Mr. Holley might do some work for them too. Too poor
to afford cable? Then listen on WEEI. Wonder why they thought the loss

The anti-satellite ads are a corporate Entercom thing (heard on their other stations as well), not necessarily a reflection of WEEI brass, and certainly not necessarily a reflection of Arnold and Holley's personal opinions. Their commentary about the Sox moving 30-odd games from broadcast to cable is their personal opinion...what they're paid to be on the radio for. I think I see a difference.

Much ado about nothing, IMO

Uhhh...this is actually an MAB spot, running on stations througout the state. Though the EEI ones are somewhat different, all are the same premise with the phone company lady though.

Except I once heard Mr. Arnold praise the anti-sattelite radio ad as being terrific. I know I'm taking this too seriously (or sirius-ly) but that that ad is really annoying and tacky.

Furthermore, the Big Show is making fun of people who call and say that they choose not to subscribe to cable and instead just listen to the games on...The Radio! This is a very odd dialog - people who make a living from the radio berating others who listen to the radio, literaly saying that if you didn't watch the game on television you better not comment on the game the next day because you won't know what happened.

Of course, a good radio play-by-play man ought to let you know precisely what happened. And, of course, that's not the case when "Waaaaaay back" Trupiano is turning pop-ups into near-home runs and his sidekick is whining about the umpiring or the minutiae of the Yankees game he's keeping track of.

Well this is slightly off radio topic, but that sucks because i don't even have cable...the firday night games kept me happy. i guess when money is the deciding factor, then i guess you gotta do what you gotta do and sign with nesn for the friday night games. but i don't think they could be making that much more. but to dale and holley it really is a big deal when you can't dish out an extra 50 - 80 a month for cable to watch the redsox.

typical of the well-off hosts on WEEI to belittle and degrade people who can't afford cable. It probably also has something to do with the fact their target is affluent 25-54 year old males who have no trouble paying for cable.
