WEEI now broadcasting on WMKK 93.7 HD3

Its actually transmitting from the WNNW AM site in Andover/Lowell. It must be directional because the signal is almost non-existent where I am located and I'm located 5-10 minutes from the site.

It's got the range of a college station Chris. It's really just a translator.

I can't get it in places in Methuen, Andover, North Andover.

It has to be shoehorned in pretty tightly so as not to interfere with the protected contours of WFEX and WPHX and (to a much lesser extent) first-adjacent WPRO. Given those limitations, the signal has to be very limited in footprint.

If you're getting 93.7 HD1, then you should also be getting 2 and 3, unless by HD1 you're just seeing the text display but just getting the analog audio. Some tuners do have trouble with certain HD3 streams, but I haven't seen one that has a problem with the HD2 yet.

Let's not get too excited. One big limitation to HD radio has to do with bandwidth. By the time you parse signals down to HD3, you end up with very compressed audio that can be fatiguing to listen to for any length of time. It's good, I suppose, for those who live within 20 or so miles north of the Peabody tx site but who have difficulty getting WEEI at night (Merrimack Valley?). But many of you may well find that the AM signal actually sounds better.

It's no substitute for simply putting WEEI's programming on the main 93.7 signal.

I think Entercom is should put WEEI on 107.3 ( 850-107.3 simulcast ) and put WAAF on 93.7. Sell 1440 Worcester and put 107.3 back on Paxton for good. Anything to get Mike-FM off the air is cool with me.

93.7 Mike FM is ok, it's not the best station. I think, they should keep Mike FM, but, change it a little bit, work better on their playlist. Play more New and current AC, Urban AC, Country, Dance, Reggae and some (Soft=Classic Rock=Example Fleetwood Mac) But focus more on Today's NEW AC=Colbie Caillat, Urban AC=Fantasia, Ruben Studdard, NEW Country, New Dance Music, and New Reggae.
6am-Midnight Everyday, They should put on AP News on the Top of the hour followed by a One Minute Local Sports Update, and add some syndicated shows on weekends (example=Jim Brickman, Sol Kafe) This will make them better. That's just myidea. They can do a lot better like this. That's just my idea. If they work on their playlist, and programming they can be better.

Oh, I was getting the HD 1 and 2 on the workroom floor and 3 might come in for a few seconds but then went silent and eventually I got a "not available" message.

With some stations, the HD3 won't come in even though the HD1 and HD2 will...95% of the time that's because the station is transmitting in extended hybrid mode, and the HD3 is using the extra 24kbps while the HD1 & 2 are each getting 48kbps of the main 96kbps channel. In most cases, the extended hybrid data carriers are received the same as the regular data carriers, but because the extended carriers are closer to the main analog signal there is more of a chance for interference...especially multipath...to cause problems.

An argument can be made for listener fatigue with a multicast channel...especially one at 24kbps. Even a very well pre-processed signal that sounds "CD quality" at first glance is still very lossy...and will eventually cause fatigue. That said, WEEI-AM is, if I'm not mistaken, transmitting at 5 or 6 kHz audio bandwidth. (I'm guessing based on listening to many Red Sox games between 2003-2007) That narrow a range will cause listener fatigue, too!

WMKK-HD 3 was giving me trouble on the workroom floor but when I was in the breakroom, esp. near windows, I could pick it up, broadcasting WEEI (Celts game/Fri night) but I see what you mean about the HD3 tech. stuff

WEEI will be flipping to 107.3/97.7 later this spring. Hillman morning show will be on the new WEEI, Dennis and Callahan to a 3 hour midday slot. 93.7 will remain MIKE FM.

When did Jason tell you this...? ::) Tell you what, have Red Sox games air on 93.7 as well as the 2 freqs
you mention and I'd be happy. It comes in a 5 out of a possible 5 at work.

ned's prognostications: $0

Fybush's incisive commentary about ned's prognostications: priceless!

Still LMAO! :D

What ID do they use on 93.7 HD-3? out of range of its HD signal ? What is the status of 103.7 FM adding HD?

I listened carefully to 850 yesterday for about 10 minutes before the hour to 10 minutes after the hour. Near the top of the hour they did say "WEEI Boston" but I heard no mention of WMKK-HD3. I wonder if that ID appears only on the FM side.

There is some vagaries about how exactly an multicast channel must ID itself. The rules (73.1201) state:

A radio station operating in DAB hybrid mode or extended hybrid mode shall identify its digital signal, including any free multicast audio programming streams, in a manner that appropriately alerts its audience to the fact that it is listening to a digital audio broadcast.

Technically, this does not REQUIRE an auditory ID; it can be accomplished by sending call letters to the radio's visual display, which almost every (or maybe just plain "every") HD Radio tuner can receive and display. This is sort of a gray area that the FCC hasn't really been clear on, most likely because they want broadcasters to retain flexibility in the face of new technology.

Still having trouble getting WMKK-HD 3 on the workroom floor but tonight I was able to get WKLB-HD 2
(classic country) half decently on the HD portable. Sometimes I _almost_ lost the signal when someone walked by but it was coming in...headphones with a long cord helped.

I find HD3 reception generally much less steady and stable than HD2 or HD1 channels for the most part, and there are examples on all my HD radios, not just the Insignia portable. I also have a Sangean HD home tuner and an iLuv home HD stereo table clock radio.
