WEEI/OR SPORTS HUB 985? WHAT YOU LIKE NOT LIKE?

Hello everyone, which one do you like better? Why and why not? What time is the best time to listen to the one that you like, where you listen from, does that station come in good or not, how about at your house, may you get that station at home or not?

Please tell us which one do you like and who would you recomend us to listen to, why and why not?

I like WEEI 850am. They've been around for a good while, and they sound great. Anyone is good to listen to on there, my favs are Dennis and Callahan, Dale and Holley, Planet Mikey, Mike Mutnanski. Personally for me, anyone is good on there, I have no problem with them. They've been around for a good while, and their knowledge is excelent!!!

Which one do you like better? why and why not?
ESPN Radio
Fox Sports Radio
Sporting News Radio

Personnally I like Fox Sports Radio, Big Ben Maller is one of the BESR radio personalities on there. Currently he can be heard early Saturday/Sunday mornings 1am-6am Eastern Time. I like the way he talk, it make you want to listen more. His show consists of both Sports Talk and Entertaniment Segments, some of the things he comes up with will be surprising to hear. All in all he's good.
I also like John Fricke. He is BANGING! If you like Football, College Football, Basketball, College Basketball, if you like all four, John Fricke is your best bet to listen to. He is by far one of the nicest radio personalities like you can never hear in your life. He is currently on Fox Sports Radio early mornings weekends

I also like ESPN Radio, they have great information on Sports.

Personnally I'd rather hear Both Sports Talk with Listenner Interaction.

Personnaly I wish WEEI 850 could have gotten Sporting News Radio, they sound more interactive and more attractive that get your attention better. Thats' just personal

Thank you for your time please let us know your thoughts?

DA is the best addition to sports radio in Boston in years and it's a pleasure to hear him instead of Mikey talking about the size of CC Sabbathia's ass or something otherwise inane. The rest of their lineup is good. Toucher and Rich is still hit and miss for me but I'm an old fart and maybe not part of their demo. But if I want to hear about sports without the political bile, it's an option. I'll put on Felgy and Mazz when WEEI has Smerlas or Johnson or some of their other insufferable co-hosts. And I'm REALLY grateful for Trupiano and Hardy on the weekends so I can tune out Craig and Larry...

98.5 all the way.
John Dennis is interesting, but Callahan just leaves me feeling agitated, which is not a feeling I enjoy.
I stopped listening altogether.
Toucher & Rich can be hit or miss, but I appreciate their humility and also their hilarity (when they nail it).

Dale & Holley vs Tangway/ Zolak is probably a tie, it depends on if I'm in the mood for high energy (t/z) or feeling more low key (D/H).
Felgey and Mazz by a mile, the Big Show is a distant memory.

I like Maller and Fricke is good, JT the Brick has a huge fan club in Boston

I think ESPN bought thier way into WEEI
Is Tony Bruno on in Boston?

@Tony, I think Sports Hub 98.5 might air Tony Bruno last hour (Midnight-1am) If I am correct, I think DA states he's on 6pm-Midnight weeknights?

Thank you all for your replys, and good respoces.

DA speaks very well spoken. His pronounciation is understandable. I also like Dale and Holley show.

What may these stations do to make them better, and do to make you listen more to them?

For me, after most major games (Red Sox, Pats and Celtics) keep local air talent on, have a post game talk show of some kind. Have them on at least for two hours. So people on their way home may listen and chime in on the game. That's what they may do to make themeslves better. Other then that, all is good for me.
I just wish WEEI could have put Sporting News Radio on, because (for me) they sound more "attention grabbing" With all their jingles, sweepers and liners, they seem more energetic. I know ESPN is more famous, but that's just my thought

How about your thoughts?

Thank you and Peace for all

I believe WBZ-FM airs Bruno 11pm - 1 am unless there's a Bruins game on in which D.A.(or someone else)
comes on after the game coverage ends, and stays on till midnight.

WEEI did well but so did WBZ-FM, in fact gaining a lot more listeners than expected. There is indeed room for 2 all sports stations in town (WWZN now has just a small amount of sports, as prog talk has increased its hours.) In 25-54 men, they went from 12th to 3rd. Numbers up almost 50 per cent over the previous month.

The gains WBZ got probably came at the expense of music stations rather than WEEI.

98.5 has really grown on me. EEI has too many voices that shout over one another in the P.M., who can't stand a contrary opinion to theirs (which is usually the Red Sox or Pats company line), and bully those who fight back. Zolak and Tanguay (well, Zolak, really) provides insight with a tone that sounds like I'm sitting at a bar, meaning that I'm enjoying the time, as opposed to the hipster/snoozester duo from 10-2. D and C are clear favorites for my tastes during my drive, so long as they keep moving and don't be-labor points and/or go into politics that is viciously one-sided. The weekends are a wash -- I'll listen to what interests me in between errands, and I'm very willing to simply switch off if need be. Overall, I'll be shocked if 98.5 doesn't remain successful, and I'm most intrigued to see what happens when the rights for "Patriots Monday/Friday" are up for grabs.

If I go show-by-show I find myself leaning a bit towards WEEI but by no means am I faithful.

In the morning I throw on Sirius NFL Radio for the Opening Drive. I am not one for frat boy radio, nor do I want political undertones to every discussion be it sports or otherwise.

Mid day, I listen to Dale & Holley. Dale is a bit stale at times, but I love Holley, the insight he has, and how he interacts with listeners, guests, etc. I find Zolak goofy on tv and I think I let that cloud my feelings for him on the radio. I am not a Tanguay fan at all. The sky is falling after every Red Sox loss, or if the Celtics don't win by enough. No thanks. I'll take the guys who look at the big picture and have a solid knowledge base of all four major pro sports AND a background with some of the lesser sports and college.

In the afternoon, I lean more towards the Big Show. Yeah, the yelling and celebrity callers are obnoxious. But, I like the guests (Gammons, Carucci, etc). Some of the new wave cohosts (Lou Merloni, Max, etc) bring a lot to the show and the Monday interview with Belichick is must listen radio.

At night it is DA, no doubt about it. I don't care how much the Yankees suck. I don't care about Manny any more. I don't care about the 1963 Red Sox. So I don't listen to Mikey.

The weekends are a toss up. Any station that allows Mustard and Johnson on the air has to be #1 already because they can't help. I tolerated Hardy at BCN, I love Troupiano but I don't see that show working either. On Saturday mornings, I'd rather hear Mut and Bradford or a college football pregame, or anything other than what the two options are so I tend to stick with Sirius. Not a BC fan, so I ignore their game broadcasts unless they are getting beat up, then I tune in if I am in the car ;D . The NFL pregame show on WEEI and the baseball show are fantastic. The Patriots pregame show is horrible. Too many commercials. Too much Tanguay and Gresh (any Gresh is too much Gresh). Butch Sterns drives me crazy when he hosts a show. As a guest on the Big Show once in a while I can take him, but not running his own show. Burton is a decent listen.

To improve each station, here is what I propose:

98.5
Continue to add new, fresh, local content on the weekends. Get some more new voices out there. The market is there.
Develop DA into the voice (face?) of the station. He has what a lot of people are looking for, a grounded approach to sports talk. Eventually mature him into a more prominent role.
Utilize the Kraft family and pay for some higher profile, better spoken NFL guys than what the current Patriots' pregame show has to offer.
Find a little more balance between the sky is falling crowd and the good ship lollipop crowd.
When the contract is up, wrestle Patriots Monday and Friday away from WEEI. It will give Patriots fans one-stop-shopping for all of their needs.

WEEI
See weekend advice above. Mutnansky, Bradford, John Risch (sp?), etc all are wonderfully talented and connected people. Get them on the air more and more.
Keep adding substance. The ESPN connections should allow more guests like Gammons, Schefter, etc to get on the air. This balances out the equation with the screaming and opinion.
Eliminate the celebrity callers. They add nothing.
Dump the Mustard and Johnson show. Outside of one or two people, I cannot think of anyone who listens to that show for enjoyment.
In the offseason, add the baseball and football shows intermittently. Perhaps adding an NBA and/or college-based show.

thank you for all your good words and advice.

Sports Hub Morning show suck but the rest of The Sports Hub lineup is OK. I been a fan of WEEI since the old AM 590 days (Eddie A. Was the Best ). D&C , The Big Show and Larry Johnson are Great ( Planet Mikey Sucks ). I dont think WEEI need be on a FM signal in Boston ( Ratings still great on 850 ), but I will not miss the trash that is on 93.7, 107.3 and 97.7 if Entercom move WEEI onto the FM dial. Now that Boston legal radio music stations are garbage, WEEI and The Sports Hub are the only legal Boston stations I listen too . I give a edge to WEEI but JT The Brick is a great pick up for 98.5 .

I'll take The Sports Hub over EEI ANY day of the week (haven't listened to EEI since The Hub went on the air), however I almost ran my car off the road the other day when I heard Gary Tanguay proclaim that the Celtics won't lose back-to-back games for the ENTIRE SEASON. And he banged this drum for an entire hour! I don't care how talented an NBA team is--- how can you possibly make such a statement? What happens when one of "The Big Three" go down (and you know they will, they are all well past their prime). We're talking about a team that just got spanked by the Suns at home... and managed to squeak by Minnesota by just two points. ::)

Its outstanding to hear the Bruins on an FM signal..everybody on the air sounds energized, now that a station finally understands that hockey is an important part of the Boston sports scene..WEEI seemingly ignored the Bruins for more discussions on Manny's hair..one of the many reasons why I no longer listen nearly as much as I once did..

Dale and Holley are the only appointment listening I find on WEEI..I always check in on the Bruins on the Sports Hub..wondering what happens when Toucher and Rich's contracts are up..its likely the only reason they were retained was to at least have warm bodies in the studio that were already under contract until CBS decides what it wants to do long term in AM drive..

I listened to T&R once. I thought it was a completely different type of show than D&C. I can't see D&C regular listeners switching, except for the ones who hate D&C, but listen every day anyway.

Dale and Holley have it all over Tanguay and Zolak.........no contest.

Afternoon drive is the battleground. Personally, I have always disliked Felger, conversly, I have always been a fan of Mazz. If the Big Show has someone like Larry Johnson, Smerlas, Butch Sterns, Deossie, or Steve Burton on, I switch to 98.5, Felger notwithstanding. One thing I do like about Felger is that he doesn't allow so called celebrity callers to make their tired speeches. If the Big Show has Merloni, McAdam, Buckley, Maxwell, or other good co-hosts on I stay with Ordway.

On weekends I usually listen to the Baseball/Football show, whichever is in season. The rest of the time I leave it on 98.5. I absolutely abhor the Mustard and Johnson mess. I can't believe they put it back on. A has-been and a never-was, who have no sports expertise or insider connections hosting a show featuring the same callers, saying the same things week after week. This is the epitome of bad radio.

Generally speaking I would give the overall nod to WEEI. I do, however, like the way 98.5 seems to handle the callers. Their method seems to discoutrage the likes of Frank from Gloucester, Steve from Fall River, the Screecher from Quincy and the rest of the usual suspects. That definitely helps their quality.

I think the concept of the Toucher and Rich morning show is cool, but it really doesn't fit with the rest of the station right.

I like 98.5 The Sports Hub better then WEEI not because it is on FM like all of you people who think AM radio is obsolete, but because I find the hosts to click better, more interaction between the callers and hosts, and they treat the callers better. Less screaming and no celebrity callers. I also like the imaging guy on 98.5 The Sports Hub. The fact that it is on FM is a plus as well, but not a deciding factor on why I change my presets.

I still find myslelf going to WEEI in the mornings, I'm not growing to like Toucher and Rich and I don't think I ever will. I'm in their demo too!

I think it's fascinating watching Comcast Sports Network and all of the WEEI and 98.5 guys cohost shows with each other...just don't cohost with the guys they go directly up against.
There must be some interesting conversations during commercial breaks.
