WEEI: TIRESOME CALLERS

I've been listening to the D&C fill-ins and notice that "Frank from Gloucester" calls in about the same time every day. He also appears on other shows. In the past, wasn't it true that they didn't allow people to call every day? Which leads me to the thought (and I've mentioned it in the past) that Frank is basically a performer with an inside line. Perhaps an on-air "guest," although they don't call him that. Thing is he's annoying...

what's odd (or hypocritical) is Frank gets on several of the shows but I've heard callers get cut off or "blown up" when they call more than one show. On The Big Show, I've heard Pete ask a caller if he'd called an earlier show and when they did, he'd cut them off.

I think that your statement may be true or at least partially true. This AM, I believe it was Steve Burton, who said that Frank called in off the air and said he didn't want to go on the air today. I've heard it said by others that he called in "off the air". It's not just Frank, though. There are a bunch of "celebrity" callers: Dakota, Danny the screecher, Tony from Bridgewater, Steve from Fall River, Bill from NH, and several others whose names don't immediately spring to mind. They all have one thing in common. They're all annoying, usually ill-informed, and one-trick ponies.

Mustard and Johnson, the worst show in the history of radio, has or had (I haven't listened to the show in a couple of years) the same callers every week and they always talked about the same thing. They actually seemed to call in a set order. It would be nice to have a sports show on radio on Saturdays.........too bad.

Perhaps one or more of the radio experts on this forum can shed some light on this. Do some callers have an inside track?

and don't forget the overall schtick for that show--Mustard as a Yankees fan... also, you forgot Joey from the North End and Mike from Canton... anyone remember Dakota's short-lived show on WWZN? I didn't think so. Believe me, you didn't miss a damn thing.

Dakota's no longer on the air? I was just warming up the radio so I could listen, darn.

Did you say "warming up the radio"? Talk about using outdated verbiage! Do you also mimeograph articles, send carbon copies, brush your teeth with Dr. Lyons Tooth Powder and correct mistakes with gum erasers?

R.I.P. Butch from The Cape . The all-time best caller on WEEI .

ahhh warming up the radio.... what you did before they decided to run a little power thru the filament string to keep the tubes warm, cozy, and ready to go.

50C5 35W4 12BA6 12BE6 12AV6 ahhhh the memories of building my first radio.... anyone see my tuning tool I want to align the IF strip.

Butch from the Cape was the best... and from what was published about him after his death he was quite the guy.

All these people are embarrassing --not to themselves of course-- to a power station like EEI. It's just so old now, but it's clear to see that these narcisists are valued for the content they provide for the last 15m of The Big Show.
The whole ethnic identification thing is awkward too. You hear a guy's voice and you can almost tell he's a nyy fan, or that he's from Cranston/Johnston RI.
I generally hear 15-20 mins in the morning and catch about the same on the commute home. I don't think I could stand any more.

***Anbody remember when Jerry used to begin his program by saying "if you have called before, please don't call again, allowing us to talk to new and interesting people."

what always amused me about the whole D&C/Butch thing is I'm sure Callahan is one of those "tough on crime" guys but sucked up to a convicted criminal.

I never liked Butch's schtick.

Personally, I hope that Callahan never comes back. He no longer has any inside tracks to the players or teams. He's been working the AM shift for so long I think he's lost touch with most of his old contacts. According to him, he never even goes to night games any more. He's basically turned into a name-calling cheap shot artist............tough guy with a microphone.

I guess Callahan is supposed to be back on the air fairly soon...

Bruce Allen on BSMW today is reporting that John Dennis' current absence was unplanned and theorizes that D & C may not be back. Anyone hear any more about this?

I thought JD's deal was up at month's end: maybe it was earlier than that?

"I never liked Butch's schtick." I'm sure the guy he ratted out and who was subsequently killed, wasn't thrilled with it either.

One listen to 'Mike & Mike' on ESPN gives everyone ample evidence on how inept and third-world WEEI's 'fill-in' hosts are. 'Pathetic' doesn't even begin to describe people like 'Eddie Munster' Meat Puppet; Johnson; and all the rest. With very few exceptions, radio hosts have a swelled sense of self-worth. D&C certainly fall into that category: One is a hack sports columnist from a newspaper that may not even exist in a year or two while the other is a failed Ch. 7 sports 'anchor.' Have they been holding out for the brass ring, as though they somehow deserve one? Who's to say? But absence doesn't make the heart grow fonder, as listeners simply turn the dial or switch the radio off entirely. Leverage? I hardly think Callahan or Doughboy have any. They're probably finding that out now. Saddled with too much 'self-worth,' D&C will never live up to the opinion they have of themselves. As for Meat Puppet, he's probably seeing that as his 'Big Chance.' When I saw this Eddie Munster wannabe on TV for the first time I was shocked that someone from radio could actually LOOK worse than they Sound. But rodeo clown Meat Puppet manages to do just that.

Mike and Mike's aren't bad. I tune in when the station will come in a bit. The new local show on 1510 is fairly pathetic. They talk about how they won't yell over each other like the "prima donnas" down the dial and then do yell over each other. They have a woman co-host who I haven't heard say more than a few lines because they always talk over her... If D&C leave, I wonder who'd they hire permanently.

Talking over each other is part of the DNA for sports radio hosts & co-hosts. Your proverbial 'too many cooks in the kitchen' syndrome. Each of them needs to preen and show their feathers, and the only 'feathers' they have are their vocal chords. So they play 'my-logic-is-better-than-your-logic' with each other, while callers are left abandoned on the side of the road. This is exactly what I mean when I (correctly and factually) say that sports radio hosts & co-hosts have a massively inflated sense of self worth. It must be something that's taught at the esteemed Connecticut School of Broadcasting.

I think it would be amusing if 'EEI would single out a few of their so-called celebrity callers,
let them come on the air and then "blow them up" immediately, every time they called. It would be funny to see how long they would continue to call before they gave up. I bet people like Frank, Dakota, Danny from Quincy, Tony from Bridgewater, Steve from Fall River, and several others would continue to call for months.

... If D&C leave, I wonder who'd they hire permanently.
Obviously it depends entirely on what kind of "sports show" they want. With the kind of $$ they are offering they could have their pick of capable guys who could easily carry out a straight arrow show, taking calls (regulars excluded) with content heavy on the RS and Pats year round.
But I think they want the "angry white guy" approach dwelling on the drudge style headlines, giving predictable answers to the problems of the day."The SCO", who are getting killed in Prov.going against EEI, had to dump their morning guys to add O&Anthony to try and compete. D&C have great numbers, but again they have no format competition with Stern/Imus out of the picture.
