No because we talk about all owners financially and philosophies
Except we don't. Soros' firm took a position in Audacy as an investor. When was the last time anyone here had anything to say about any of the other venture capital firms that have done the same thing with iHeart, Cumulus, Beasley or anyone else?
We saw a lot some clutched pearls over EMF “taking away good stations” and “raking in millions while doing religion”.
Salem Broadcasting might be another example people have expressed worry about their influence. (NPR just did a deep dive into them “controlling the AM dial)
EMF and Salem are station operators taking active roles in the programming and operation of their stations. "Soros" is not. Do you really not see the difference?
Bezos seem to exert some control over his Walpole editorial stance too
And seeing as Geo Soros ha been know to champion and bankroll different causes, no one is allowed to raise an eyebrow or wonder?
Which brings us to the real underlying point. Whether Bob meant it this way or not (and I'm sure he didn't - he just likes to regurgitate anything he sees online without putting any new thought into it), when you say "Soros has been known to champion and bankroll different causes," there's a reason why you know his name specifically out of all the venture capitalists putting money into media firms, and that's because he's become a bogeyman to many on the right.
And I'm going to come out and say it, because it bothers me: in so much of that spotlight specifically on Soros, there's a strong undercurrent of anti-Semitism. You may not mean it that way, and I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you don't, but I promise you it's there, and if this were a political site (which it isn't supposed to be) I could launch into more posts than you want to read about the known and loud anti-Semites who use Soros' name as a scare tactic to further their cause. It's not a pleasant time to be Jewish in America right now, and yes, my hackles get raised easily by stuff like this.
(Some of you know this, some don't - my wife's family came out of the Holocaust, at least the ones who survived. This is very personal to me, and if this were a political site, I'd be telling you about all of the echoes of 1938 Germany they see in 2024 America. I don't sleep well at night these days.)
Is anyone banned from discussing Soros here? Of course not. But until and unless he takes any role at Audacy that's any different from any other venture capitalist making a short-term play on any other media company, it's entirely speculation with no grounding in reality - and I *am* going to raise an eyebrow or two about why he's being brought up specifically.
