Week 17 NFL Blackouts: May Include The Bucs

Today during an interview, Bucs' coach Jon Gruden alluded to the fact that hopefully today's win over Cleveland [mind you, another cellar-dwelling team] would "help sell out the home finale next week" vs. Seattle.

I guess they're on the clock. Otherwise WTVT and WOFL will be blacking out the game.

Might be the only blackout of the week, since Buffalo, Oakland and St. Louis are all on the road next week.

If that's the case, then it'll be the first blackout for the Bucs since 1997, when they still played at the old Tampa Stadium. Ever since they made RayJay their home, they never had a blackout, even during their so-so seasons.

Guess he doesn't pay much attention to ticket sales. All Bucs home games were sold out at the start of the season. There have been a lot of ticket "re sales" since then, i.e. fair weather fans dumping their tix for Christmas money, but, those of us in this market will again have to lose one TV game because of the 19th Century blackout policy that the NFL continues to maintain.

WTVT is T/StP, right, Foe Paw? Is WOFL ORL/Daytona or Ft. Myers? I've been to the Sunshine State twice in my 45 and 1/3 years.

WTVT is indeed Tampa. I'm assuming a la the crazy rules of blacking out the Syracuse station for a Buffalo Bills game apply, any nearby Fox station who could air the Bucs game (i.e. WOFL) won't. That can apply for WFTX, as well.

If Studio20 is correct, and the Bucs have been sold out since the beginning of the year, then it's a moot point; the locals will be able to show the Bucs game. However, the Tampa/St. Pete CBS station, WTSP, will be able to show only one of the two games they would normally have, as they cannot show any game opposite the home team's game when that game is on TV. According to J.P. Kirby's NFL maps, both networks are getting a doubleheader this Sunday, so every NFL home market with a Sunday afternoon home game will have one game blacked out, but will still have 3 to show. None of this will affect either Orlando or Fort Myers, as they are secondary markets, not primary.

Using the Syracuse example, when the Bills were at home and the NFC network had the doubleheader, the Buffalo market got only 2 games on Sunday afternoon, but Rochester, Syracuse and Erie got 3. It's only when the Bills didn't sell out that Rochester, Syracuse and Erie couldn't show the Bills, but they still got their 3 games. And when the Bills did sell out, the Buffalo market got 3 games only if the AFC network had the doubleheader. Of course, most people in the Buffalo market using an antenna could still pull in the Rochester or Erie stations, so they weren't affected by the 2-game rule. Most cities in the Phoenix market don't have that "luxury" with the Cardinals.

dhett is correct as to scheduling

My calculations have Seahawks-Bucs at 1 on Fox13, Bills-Ravens or Dolphins-Colts at 4:15 on Tampa Bay's 10, Falcons-Eagles at 4:15 on Fox13, Packers-Bears at 8:15 on WFLA-8.

FWIW the Seahawks clinched the NFC West on Xmas Eve.
