Weekday Infomercial Expands on RKO

Barry Armstrong's Infomercial will now air each day from 9a-11a. Ingrham follows from 11a to 1p. Brien 1p to 3p. He must get tremendous response to be spending all this money with RKO.

Now, Laura Ingrham will not be live!!
I heard her show last week and few eeeks ago, she gets a lot of calls from this area. Why not have Barry on as a two-three minute segment on Jen's show?
Now, with them doing thsi, they WILL lose listenners.
But then again, who knows? Maybe they will like Barry's show better. Why not just put him on 10am-1pm. Because with a good show such as Laura Ingrham, why put that on delay. The average listenner doesn't know that it's on delay, and if you try to call her show? say around 12:13p her show already finished 13 minutes ago
See what I mean?
It'd be better to have his show on 10am-1pm, or they should've just kept it the same at Noon-1pm

To be Frank. I don't think RKO cares one bit about the few people listening on RKO who may want to call Ingrhams show and I doubt any local advertisers specifically want to be on her show. The spots that run on her show are most likely ROS spots. I wouldn't want to guess how much Armstrong is paying RKO to run two hours but it has to be significant.

Don't they get Ingraham's show "for free" by running it with spots? Or maybe it's low cost. They also
run TRN's Savage and Doyle shows (maybe the Doyle show got forced on them as part of Savage deal).
What is ROS, Return of Service?

Armstrong also has an update during Howie's show; they apparently send him a list of questions to ask.

This is an act of DESPERATION! WRKO may not last the year in its current form. Howie may be allowed to go wherever he wants, but will there be any takers? Pardon me while I send an email to Stephanie Miller. (No joke; I correspond fairly frequently and they occasionally use my stuff, on one occasion thanking Laurence from Massachusetts).

I think some might be correct? Laura gives out free prizes during her show.
They should've put Barry show 9am-Noon, and put Jen Brien Noon-3pm. That would sound better.
They have a lot to work on, on that station
Once you get used to something, it changes
No wonder why most people listen to their MP3 Players...

Any word if RKO will still be broadcasting in English if Howie leaves? (Though they still would have Feinburg
and the Felon under contract). La Mega 680? As for progressive talk, it has been about as successful
(on commercial stations)in Boston as the Republican party has been in Massachusetts. (Go figure...though I will note CC at least put on not one but two daily local shows on Talk 1200. Under the Scare
America days, they put on none.)

Apparently Armstrong makes money for WRKO. Maybe they could go all-biz weekends if this keeps up.

I've noticed the commercial load has increased on Howies show. Granted he does run PSA's but mostly, ghastly 800 number ads. Timed his show today 2/2 fr 3:25 PM to 4PM. Ad time 16 minutes(with news at 3:35PM). Program time 19 minutes. Stop set before 3:35 added up to almost 8 minutes. After news hes back for about 2-4 minutes another stop set and news etc. Not back until 4:08 PM. Longest talk block is from :08 to :25. Anyone else notice this lack of continuity. Just wondering

ROS is "Run of Schedule." ROS spots aren't day-parted and are cheaper than buying specific day parts. Every station I've sold has defined ROS somewhere around 5A-8P. It's a step up from BTA, or Best Time Available (12A-12A, wherever the spots will fit.)

Anyone see the irony of Barry going head to head now against his long running Money Matters radio show that he formally hosted with the move to 9 a.m.? Does Barry Armstrong still have a vested interest in the station(s) running the syndicated Money Matters radio shows?

I don't see any Irony because Armstrong's entire goal of the shows he hosts or has someone else host is to get people into his office and sell them Insurance Annuity's or some other investment product.. He made and makes most of his money selling insurance. He still owns 1120AM, has an LMA on WPLM AM and I believe with the station in Southbridge WESO?

If he could buy time from 9am to 11am on BZ at an decent price ,I am sure he would find someone to host a Money Matters type of Infomercial.

I think WRKO should run a disclaimer before the Money matters or whatever it is called on the Howie Carr. I beleive RKO has a responsibility to its listeners to know that what they are hearing is a paid commercial and not an interview.

WBZ Radio often runs disclaimers before spots that are produced to sound like it is a news story.

the new show is airing on both stations.

??? I still don't get why, for one of the most successfull Talk Stations in Boston, why put on a (Delay Show-Especially a Famous Syndicated Show on Delay-Not Live). Why not just put Jen Brien on from 11am-2pm
If I was Assistant PD, I would've either did that, put Jen Brien on 11am-2pm,
or, put Barry show on 10am-Noon, and either Noon-3pm put either Jen Brien on, or News from (Talk Radio Network)
I would've done like that.
Since everyone here says Local is better, fine, in that case, I would've done Barry Show 10am-Noon, and Jen Brien Noon-3pm
There's a lot that station could do to improve.
If I can be Assistant PD, I would make that station SHINE!!!!!

Obviously, he's making it worthwhile for WRKO's sales dept to run his live infomercial show in the 9a to 11am slot.

how about the Laura Ingram 9-12 and Jen Brien 12-3 makes more sense to me and let barry take a hike and air on business talk stations!!

That PD should be Fired--- what a fool.... WRKO is going down the crapper....

Here is what the schedule SHOULD be--->

5-9am- tom and todd (live)
9-12- Laura Ingraham (live)
12-3- whatever the hell they want
6-9- Michael Savage (live)

Whats with this delayed broadcast CRAP?!?!?

This is insane- does WRKO WANT to go out of business???- I mean, are they trying to get worse numbers? It seems to me that they are. Laura takes a TON of calls from WRKO........!!

They should make me the PD. They only have a handful of shows to air- it's really not that hard to come up with good programming----!!!!!!

Not having Savage live is the other major pitfall of programming. No other local station has him live. He is the fastest growing talk show in the country--- Ever think that the reason his streaming listeners are growing so fast is that people can't listen to him live on the radio?!?!?!

Can you people tell I'm just a bit pissed off right now?!?!?!?!?

I'm guessing the focus is on morning and afternoon drive, then midday, and they may figure 7 pm and
after is no big deal. They're paying Howie to be on 3-7 pm. Having him give way to a syndie show at
6p--and remember he has his own little network--doesn't make sense. After 7 pm they figure
not as many people listen. Drive time is money time.

btw when Savage first came on, though, one of the reasons given was "we wanted a live show". They had carried delayed Hannity for about a year--but with some breaking news stories, like the D.C. Sniper,
they wanted a "live" show.
Armstrong's show must be making them some money. Imagine if Howie left--I'm sure they'd try to
find a local talk host for pm drive (Brien? Joe Battenfeld?) but for all we know RKO could be mostly
informercials and colon cleanser radio!

I agree with WHDH1920 and Indystorm. @Indystorm, that's how I'd put it as well. Like that.
Or maybe like WHDH1920 said
Yeah, maybe they had few listenners listenning to Laura's show, but those efw listenners are the MOST IMPORTANT for the station.
I'm not saying they're my friends, because they're not. My Teamleader (An Assistant to my boss) Her and her best friend (She's a Perdiem who work with us-She work oncall hours when asked) Anyways, both of them listen to WRKO and 96.9. These are (average listenners)
The average listenner will not know Laura's show is on Delay, that might be the same with those few listenners as I just mentioned.

So, I agree with both WHDH1920, and Indystorm

Only thing I'd disagree with is, I wouldn't fire that PD.
I'd just say, there are a lot of things they should improve on for a sucessful Talk Station.
They should (try) to put on LIVE programming on almost 24/7, either live local or live syndicated; with the exception of the hours of (??? Example weekend mornings 4am-7am-Put the Delay shows, or PSA Programming in that timeslot)
Other than that, try and have LIVE programming on there almost 24/7
So, no, I wouldn't go that far, I wouldn't say fire that PD.
Just work on some things, that's it

The PD is Jason Wolfe who has gotten his share of grief--and praise--over the years. He's still there so
things must be doing half decently. WEEI does fairly well (remember he does them too) and Entercom
must be happy with how he's managing WRKO. Even if their ratings aren't as hot as you expect they
must be doing OK at least, or you'd see a change of management and/or format.

Live and LOCAL is important, though syndicated shows in time slots when there aren't as many people
listening don't get as much attention. For breaking news events--and yes, for listener calls--then a live
show will come in handy. Of course they try to save money when they can, and time slots other than
morning, afternoon, and pm drive can be relegated to syndicated shows or even reruns (you may recall
for awhile they reran Howie at 1 am. Local...but not live.)

Other stations do run shows like Laura on delay. When it was on WTKK it could have been on as
late at 10 pm.
