Who's got the best weekend progamming or specialty shows?

I like Kiss and Jamn's mix shows and Mix's Whatever Weekends.
They feel like the weekend to me now.

My tastes are retro, oldies, and non-commercial genres, so here are some of the weekend specialty shows I like.

Why thanks! Currently the rotation is Henri "Jump Steady" Bellows,
Sister Lisa, Pete Cahill, and myself (my next show July 31). We all
have different tastes, etc. So much for my "retirement" :) As it stands
now I'm on once every month or once every two months which is fine by me.
Enough to keep on the air (25th anniversary of my first show is next
March) but not enough to burn me out/allow me to do other stuff.
Uncle Henry's also has a rotation of DJs (as does our blues show,
Mood Swings--and Mood Swings features Brian Vita of boston-radio-interest
with smooth jazz)

Yes, sorry to forget "Gendertalk". Nancy Nageroni, Gordene McKenzie and guests. Very unique show!

By the way, that "new regime" who took over WMBR last year, who cancelled many longtime popular shows and many popular, dedicated hosts simply because they didn't happen to like them, just resigned last month!

Their resignation had absolutely nothing to do with how much their decisions hurt the station, how their pledge drive was down 25% since their changes last year, how many listener complaints there have been during that period, or how many of the staff disliked them and their policies.

I really shouldn't post the details as to why that GM (and his PD) resigned here, but I'll go as far as to say that it was an entirely personal situation between that GM, and a former GM who was still on station staff. As his last act, the GM officially banned the former GM from the premesis (meaning an order to call MIT security if he shows up) for an entirely personal reason having nothing to do with the operation of the station.

Then, he stepped down before the details of the situation came out in the open, which would have left him a powerless lame duck with absolutely no credibility among anyone.

That gave a couple of really good and fair-minded MIT grad students, who became inspired to try to salvage the station, the opportunity to take over last month. (MIT requires that the GM must be a current student, whether undergrad or grad. Station policy also requires that the PD be a current student).

I don't know how long it will take them to undo the damage that last year's regime did, but they've already started working on it. The morale is already way up, after the worst I had ever seen in my 23 years involved there last year.

Things are definitely looking up at WMBR, they couldn't have gotten much worse!

Sometimes I keep flipping the dial, and catch bits of most of them!

Yes, when it was Country WCAV. There's a little history, I believe that 97.7 and 1460 in Brockton were co-owned in the past. I think they had the same call letters through the 70's or until early 80's, but I don't remember what they were.

The calls were WBET and WBET-FM BET stands for Brockton Enterprise and Times the owner at the time .
 
I listen to 101.9 WCIB down the cape , Ron Dwyer on Saturday nights at 8 if I am not listening to Yesterday's Memories on 95.9 WATD Saturday nights with Ed and George. Sunday nights at 10 I catch Bill Clark's Music Heaven on ATD as well.
 
I'm really happy to hear this, as a 27 year listener of WTBS/WMBR... back to when I'd listen to the Demimonde on Saturday afternoons...

WCIB doesn't quite make it to the Boston area due to adjacent interference from WFNX. I can usually hear them if I get anywhere south of Route 128, and when I've been on the road that way, I have heard Ron Dwyer again Saturday evenings after hearing him on WATD in the afternoon, and on Sunday evenings.

On Saturdays when he leaves WATD, he must be praying that the Sagamore and Bourne bridges aren't so backed up as to make him late for his show on WCIB!

IMO, WCIB's regular "Cool-102" classic hits format also blows away any similar station (WROR?) here in Boston.

Right now here in Somerville, I'm listening to the syndicated "Doo-Wop Stop" with "Cool Bobby B" on WWBB 101.5 Providence, and I'm getting it in fairly clean stereo even though I'm only three miles from the adjacent WFNX transmitter.

This is on my big behemoth mid-1970's Sansui 9090 analog receiver. None of my digital tuners will even get a trace of WWBB on 101.5, only WFNX splatter.

I began listening to them as WTBS in 1967, and joined the station in 1982, "retired" from my show last September.

WTBS in '67 was the first place I heard what was then new "underground" progressive album rock. The commercial rock stations (WRKO, WBZ, WMEX) were still mainly Top 40, and WBCN didn't start playing rock until March 1968.

I remember I didn't even know there was a long version of The Doors "Light My Fire" until I heard it on WTBS in the summer of '67, and I had been hearing the short version on Top 40 radio for months! Of course, nowadays the long version is played on WROR and WZLX every day...

Now that one of the two reasons I left WMBR last year has been resolved, maybe I'll consider returning there in some capacity this fall. However, the other reason I left besides last year's management was that it took up too much volunteer time for me to make a living nowadays, and I still haven't found a way to resolve that.

My favorite is the syndicated "Little Steven's Underground Garage" which is one of the few real rock'n'roll programs left. I only wish this is what Classic Rock / AOR sounded like 24/7.
