Thank you! I am pleased to be back and as stated before...rather flattered that THEY ASKED ME! The crew is rather young overall (well compared to an old-timer like me), but a nice bunch to work with. AJ is a devoted PD who has done worlds to improve the sound of the station and I think the station really has set off on a solid musical direction. I was also happy to have AJ set me in front of the mic and basically say OK, do your thing...you know what to do. No liner cards to read, no parameters other than the format clock to follow. I can be as much of a talent as I choose to and that is a nice feeling.

Jim and the rest of the sales staff are great too...having proved to be one of the nicest bunch to put up with an old radio guy who was set in his ways who insisted on coming into the studio to cut his own spots...and that my friend is how it all began :) You should have seen my face when AJ said to me, you know Hitman, I used to listen to YOU on the air and by the way I am still waiting for you to play that request you promised me you'd play like 8 years ago. HA HA

it is nice to be able to sit in front of the mic and not worry about liner cards etc.......i am glad that the PD is giving you freedom...........I also get a lot of freedom on my shifts and enjoy that.......as far as that request...i used to have an instant request jingle shout and scheduled it every other hour into a power oldie-requested or not.........i know alot of folks that are waiting for their request.......as many consultants say...the weekends set the tone for the upcoming week......you get more folks sampling on the weekends...........

Rest of the market voicetracked?

I sleep late on weekends and seem to spend the rest of the time watching NASCAR & ballgames, so don't catch much local radio. Has the rest of the market given in to the VT and Syndication pattern? It does seem like there's a bunch of countdown shows...

I think its easier for the stations to bring in interns and minimum wage people who are looking to break into the biz, which is not a bad thing. We all started out once, but you need to aircheck them and work with them and teach them what you are after and how to succeed. You also need to teach them to get off the liner cards and to project the station through themselves. Yes...dare I talk personality again. I think that is the biggest failure these days. People figure well, its only the weekend so who cares. In fact they should be thinking...its the weekend...more people are probably out there doing whatever...cutting grass, BBq'ing...at the pool whatever and we have a chance to be heard by them. I cut my grass and I turn up my radio as loud as I want. I go to work and it has to be set at a nice quiet volume that won't bug anyone else. I have far more chance of noticing something on a weekend than I do during the week and I listen closer than most average listeners would because of my background.

Canned shows are easy and cheap. Heck Revolution uses them too, but you must try and be discriminating over which ones you decide to line yourself up with. There has to be a middle ground. Some personality and some canned stuff on a weekend can go a long way...much further than 24 hours of Casey Kasem into Ryan Seacrest into Rick Dees, etc.
