WEEM-FM Format Rock/Pop

After recent talk of rock/pop radio, I decided to post a small portion of our playlist. We are 24/7 Rock/Pop. It's not perfect, the students and I are working the kinks out. We just went this direction in early October and plan to have the proper imaging rolled out by January.

Constructive criticism appreciated.

How would you image this station? We are thinking "Modern Hit Music" and go with a more rock/alt imaging.

This is our normal format and is what we are playing today. We overschedule, so the last 1 or 2 songs often get resynced out:

1pm 12/9/10
Michael Franti & Spearhead "Say Hey"
Sick Puppies "Maybe"
Downtown Fiction "I Just Wanna Run"
Daughtry "September"
Flyleaf "Again"
Marianas Trench "Cross My Heart"
Killers "Mr. Brightside"
Maine "Right Girl"
Shinedown "I Dare You"
Neon Trees "Animal"
Finger Eleven "Paralyzer"
Nickelback "Gotta Be Somebody"
Apollo Drive "Papercut"
OneRepublic "Secrets"
Paramore "The Only Exception"
Runner Runner "So Obvious"
Cage The Elephant "Shake Me Down"

2pm 12/9/10
A Rocket To The Moon "Like We Used To"
Boys Like Girls "The Great Escape"
3 Doors Down "It's Not My Time"
Cobra Starship "Hot Mess"
Black Keys "Tighten Up"
Fall Out Boy "Sugar, We're Going Down"
Good Charlotte "Like It's Her Birthday
Hey Monday "I Don't Wanna Dance"
Lifehouse "All In"
Breaking Benjamin "Give Me A Sign"
Thriving Ivory "Where We Belong"
Paper Tongues "Get Higher"
Linkin Park "Waiting For The End"
The Script "For The First Time"
Maroon 5 "Misery"
Lit "My Own Worst Enemy"
O.A.R. "This Town"

3pm 12/9/10
Three Days Grace "Never Too Late"
Train "Marry Me"
We The Kings "We'll Be A Dream"
Owl City "Fireflies"
Weezer "Beverly Hills"
The Ready Set "Love Like Woe"
Stone Sour "Say You'll Haunt Me"
Kid Rock "Born Free"
Travie McCoy "Need You"
Sick Puppies "Maybe"
Panic At The Disco "I Write Sins Not Tragedies"
Neon Trees "1983"
Green Day "Wake Me Up When September Ends"
Marianas Trench "Cross My Heart"
Rob Thomas "Someday"
Cartel "The Perfect Mistake"
Cake "Sick Of You"

Seems like a good CHR/Rock format... WFLY in Albany used to be similar to this (because they didn't want to eat into WAJZ too much) then reverted to a more mainstream CHR (WKBE was also similar to a CHR/Rock but went for a more Modern AC/AAA sound eventually). With all the talk of a new format for WBZZ in Albany, I'd like to see a CHR/Rock format on that station. :D

I'm just not sure how many people like both Rob Thomas and Stone Sour - I'd listen to it (I'd love a station like that lol), but my gut tells me I'm in the minority

That's the thing. Take names out of it, they actually do fit together. "Say You'll Haunt Me" and "Someday" would be an easy segue. We are in an age of selling/playing singles, not full careers or albums.

Just like if PD's would pull the heads out of thier butts and see that some songs like Yeah Yeah Yeahs "Heads Will Roll," Temper Trap's "Sweet Disposition," and Metric's "Help, I'm Alive" actually fits very well next to Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and the such.

Get in your demo's head. We have no consultants, no professional research and we don't even have Mediabase, Mediaguide or even CMJ. You say you would like it, well there is a demo out there that will say "Hey, I like all of these songs...and I don't have to hear Jason Derulo AGAIN." All at the same time, we break songs quicker (because there is less pop/crossover-rock).

Had a meeting today and have a few tomorrow about streaming...so maybe you will have a new station to listen to soon!

Some great songs on there, but overall it looks more like a Modern A/C than a CHR. Stations like Mix 101.9 Chicago, Sophie 103.7 San Diego, and Alice 97.3 San Francisco kinda sounded like that at one point or another. Since then all of them have added at least some Rhythmic hits to their playlist.

Yeah, this is an issue we are trying to work on. It does sound very Mod A/C at times, especially with the recurrents and golds. The newer stuff has more of a pop-punk edge, so it wouldn't work so well on Mod A/C. We are going to start digging a little deeper and try to find the golds that need airplay and are neglected by the corporate cookie cutter landscape.

Definitely on that line between CHR/Rock and Modern AC. KMMT/Mammoth, CA is similar...or perhaps, was, as I have not listened to them in a couple of years.

As for an imager, how about "Today's Rock Hits" or "New Rock Hits" or "Hits that Rock"?

Just googled WEEM - can't believe you guys have a high school FM radio station (I'm really jealous lol - wish I'd had one ;D)

It's actually kind of close to WSDD (100.3 The Sound)/St. Louis, which is basically an Alternative/Hot AC hybrid

I actually think that with Paper Tongues, Cage The Elephant, 30 Seconds To Mars, My Chemical Romance, Neon Trees, etc. all growing in popularity, we're gonna see more stations like this, but I think they're gonna be classified as Modern AC (or maybe adult-leaning Alternative, like 97X in Tampa or 99X in Atlanta)

Just think if you leave out Rihanna, Katy Perry, Kesha, etc., you're gonna get classified as some sort of Hot AC

If you added the big pop songs in there, you'd have a rock-leaning CHR like KLAL/Little Rock

Yeah! We are a high school station, but a lot of people can't tell! Occasionally you get the "newbie" as they are called, and just like athletics, you have your stars and bench players and you have the great classes and the down classes...but we pride ourselves on sounding as close to a professional station as possible. I, myself, am a radio professional and programmer...so I get to tinker with the station and teach something I am passionate about.

I love The Sound in STL. Big fan of KQKQ, KOSO and Sirius1. I like to watch certain stations to see where pop-rock is going.

We feel that if we leave out Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Rihanna, we are gonna get CLASSified. :)

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas (WEEM did run our typical "36 Hours of Christmas"...as a public high school. Why? Because it fits our community standards. That's why.)

Lol I can't believe 100.3/The Sound (WSDD) just flipped to Gen X the day after I posted that - guess I'll have to check out those other two stations ;D
