WEER Is Already Planning A Permanent Vacation

Well, that was quick: The new Hamptons Community Radio WEER (88.7 FM) is planning to sign off after just 1 1/2 years.

The former WPKM writes on their website that after "struggling" for the past few months, "unless there is a last minute benefactor, WEER must say goodbye."

Five Towns (WFTU) has no interest, they're looking for something in western Suffolk near their campus. That being said, it could be the seed for a translator network if they wished.

I met Barbara, who was running HCR. She was very nice, very enthusiastic, but she was caught in a situation where it was difficult to survive in this economy with a station like WEER/WPKM. Look how difficult it was for the WLIU sale, and that's a signal that covers the whole east end.

The common thought is that there is money in the Hamptons. While true, it only comes out for the season.
