WEEU's Charlie Adams - question and comment

How long has Charlie Adams been on WEEU?

Today he was doing Charlie & Co. from the Amity Twp. Fair in Douglassville, which just west of the Berks/Montco border.

He was at Underground Coffee in Douglassville. And he's been there since Marconi invented radio. He's really an arrogant b*****d; really full of himself. Also, the music he plays SUCKS.

I take it you've seen him in person? Whatever arrogance Mr. Adams has doesn't seem to come across on radio. Now Paul Roberts, who does the Mon. and Thurs. night "Sports Democracy", as well as HS football pbp Friday nights on 'EEU, has a somewhat grating voice, but that's another thread.

One morning this week he played the Mamas and Papas' version of the Beatles' "I Call Your Name", a lame remake of one of the Fab Four's lamer tunes. Another time he played a bluegrass remake of KISS's "Rock and Roll All Nite" (?!?!?!), neglecting to backsell it (as he often does) so we would know who performed it.

OTOH Charlie's also spun the Kinks' "Picture Book", which I like.

And I've also read and enjoyed Mr. Adams' Baseball in Reading, part of the "Images of America" series from Arcadia Publishing.

SERIOUS question, maybe Elevator Operator can jump in here.

How often does WEEU do music, if at all?
How is the playlist selected?
Or, do the jocks have free reign over the library (or, can they bring in their own stuff)?

To my ear, and I don't get a chance to listen that much, they're still doing music during the morning and afternoon drives. I think most of their weekend slots (previously filled mainly by music except during sports), have been filled with talk shows. Just part of the changing landscape of AM radio.

Charlie was on the former WHUM in the mid 70's, and came to WEEU about 76-77 as a weekend jock. He also worked on the morning show with Jack Gounder until he retired in the mid 80's. At this point, Charlie is the veteran of the staff...since Jo Painter only arrived from WRFY in 81-82, I wanna say.

When I was at WEEU, the seniority was INSANE. GM Dick Schilpp, middayer Jack Holcomb, & news director Lew Runkle had been there since the mid 1950's. Followed by Charlie in 76-77ish. Evening jock Bill Brosey also joined from WAEB in 77. Mitch Gerhart's been there since the mid 80's, too.

As I recall, when I got blown out in 93, I was the first jock to be fired in MANY years. It was a proud, proud moment ;-)

I was trying to remember what establishment he was at. I know he mentioned something about the Amity Township Fair taking place that day or that weekend.

As for a feature of Charlie & Co. I like, I wish he'd show some consistency in its scheduling. Every day, usually coming out of the 8 am news, he and his sidekick run down the historical events on that day and the celebrity and sports birthdays for that day (the almanac IOW). I say usually because some days he'll do the almanac right after the 7:30 news and interview a special guest after the 8:00. Like today when he interviewed the director of this year's Reading Riverfest coming out of the 8:00 news. Sometimes I wish I could buy WEEU and tell Charlie, "Have the almanac every day at the same time, whether its by you or a fill in [when Charlie's off, so is the almanac], or don't have it at all. ):-("

Charlie and his oh wows

In the same shift he might play both Don Ho's "Tiny Bubbles" and Steppenwolf's "For Ladies Only". He played them both today.

I agree on both of those. Certainly Adams is far better than anyone up in Allentown for my tastes. Back in the 1980s I'd pretty much listen to Gunther/WAEB in the mornings for wx / traffic / news etc., but I have tired of his now-constant right-wing whining.

Speaking of the almanac shtick, the guy I enjoy is Gerhart -- he sounds like he's clearly the more clever, more intelligent guy in the pair, because his portion of the almanac usually includes a fair amount of wordplay that doesn't sound like it's scripted.

He could frankly hold his own in the AM once Adams retires -- based on his banter this AM, Charlie is 63.

His music, to me, seems more like novelty tunes -- sort of a warped "Jack" format -- than anything else.

I agree that Roberts can be hard to listen to.

Dave Langley - the evening drive news guy - has a similarly affected voice.

I decided today, since I have a half an hour or so to just do nothing, to get on the net and look for anything at all to read. I thought I'd look on this board and see the history. I can't believe what I read here. Charlie Adams has talent? Am I the only one who sees him as an announcement and weather reader and nothing else? There is no talent, no thought, no preparation at all put into his show, and never has been. It makes me wonder if I've listened to the same station that you all have listened to.

i am sure some station has an old automation unit with carousel carts and reel to reel tapes and the odd and even time checks on those humongo carts that could sell to weeu and put the old bonneville reels of ez listening. it would sound better than the bovine scatology that we hear today...ps...what the hell is a weeu bear????

...wait...now i get it it is a teddy bear to encourage kids to read...but can they change the name to scare kids to read....its the weeu
chupracabra!!!!!

The Chupacabra or Chupacabras (pronunciation: /tʃupa'kabɾa/, from the Spanish words chupar, meaning "to suck", and cabra, meaning "goat"; literally "goat sucker"), also called El Chupacabras in Spanish, is a legendary cryptid rumored to inhabit parts of the Americas. It is associated more recently with sightings of an allegedly unknown animal in Puerto Rico (where these sightings were first reported), Mexico, and the United States, especially in the latter's Latin American communities.[1] The name comes from the animal's reported habit of attacking and drinking the blood of livestock, especially goats. Physical descriptions of the creature vary. Eyewitness sightings have been claimed as early as 1990 in Puerto Rico, and have since been reported as far north as Maine, and as far south as Chile. It is supposedly a heavy creature, the size of a small bear, with a row of spines reaching from the neck to the base of the tail. Biologists and wildlife management officials view the Chupacabra as a contemporary legend.[2]

His primary passion is as an author and raconteur, particularly regarding the paranormal / ghost stories. That doesn't come out often on the radio.

Gunther up in Allentown is probably a better shill; Charlie's heart doesn't seem to be in advertising and promotion.

Much morning radio consists of water-cooler caliber conversation about subjects I have no interest in, or sophomoric shtick. Charlie is at least better than that.

That's why my morning radio listening consists of 85% NPR / 10% KYW / 4% WEEU / 1% WAEB.

Charlie's OK. He's at the helm of a ship with no direction and no support. He does promote radio and the community. Seems like those who are out and on the beach are quick to point fingers. It's a shame. Radio is it's worst enemy!

ok..then grab the rudder and take control of the ship b4 it sinks. i think most people will react in an emergency situation and to finger point and blame while your on the inside and given the power to change the direction is no excuse.

Come on folks. Give WEEU a break. It's not the best, but it's not the worst. Everyone acts like Y-102's morning show is something to write home about. At least Charlie plays original and fun music. How many times can we handle hearing Daughtry in one day on Y-102?

Oh God, Y-102 is horrible too, but on a different level.
