WEFM Aircheck March 1, 1978

This aircheck was recently shared with me. It is from March 1, 1978, WEFM (99.5) had just switched from classical to a top 40 format. It must have been an abrupt change for the station's previous listeners!

Actually, this is kind of funny. This station was owned by Zenith Radio
Corp, and sold it to General Cinema Corp around 1970/1971. However a group called "The Citizens Committee To Save WEFM" objected to the change in format. This actually went before a court who ordered GCC the keep the Classical format. This went on for years, and it was not until around 1978 was GCC able to change the format.

Old Chicago

Never understood why WEFM didn't do better. WMET had just given up Top 40 & a few months later WEFM was the only mainstream Top 40 rocker on FM.

yeah, i enjoyed the statation back the. My favorite tho was the Old "BBM-FM. I really enjoyed that station when it was around. The Jocks then were Lee D Young, Tony Phillips and Al mitchell in the morning. Great station.

In the early 70s BBM-FM had Bob Sirott, using the name Robert R Bradley & Steve King, along with Tony Phillips.

Do you remember who was pd about that time? Think. A young man who later became known as "Pig Vomit". Now, you know the rest of the story. ;D

Radioman.....WEFM. However, it was probably a bit later than this aircheck...more than likely 1979. WEFM was owned by General Cinema at the time.

Ah yes.... General Cinema.

I remember those guys. Used to be my biggest account "back in the day". Got to see a lots of free movies when they were my customer. And then there's the big sale I lost. We had a big promo cooked up with them for the movie "Jaws 3". We were going to give away a live shark (only a few inches long and in an aquarium). But then the shark died and the deal fell through. To this day, my favorite excuse for "why didn't you get the order?"
"Because the shark died".

WEFM? I like classical music, so I wasn't exactly thrilled with the format flip....even though I knew it was inevitable. As a top 40 station, I thought it was okay. My memory's a little fuzzy, but given all the talent there, I seem to remember it as being more "rigid" than it needed to be. I liked it better when it flipped again to soft adult contemporary (the music, anyway....not the sterile presentation).
