Weigel Broadcasting’s WCIU to become CW Network affiliate

One of Chicago’s last locally-owned independent television stations is going network.

In a surprising move, Chicago-based Weigel Broadcasting announced plans today to turn its flagship WCIU-Channel 26 into an affiliate of The CW Network this fall.

The station long known as “The U” will be rebranded as “The CW26” and begin carrying the network’s primetime lineup from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday through Friday — including such shows as “Riverdale,” “The Flash” and “Arrow” — along with children’s programming on Saturday mornings.

What about WGN TV it is no indepently owned after a long time of being a CW network

Its been owned by Tribune since 1948. WGN was never owned by The CW, but one of the network's most important affiliates when it did so in 2006 until it left in 2016.

Update on WCIU getting the CW affiliation.

Robservations on the media beat:

CW26

Twenty-five years after WCIU-Channel 26 shed its affiliation with the Univision Spanish-language network and became fully independent as “The U,” the Weigel Broadcasting station is about to take on a new identity. On Sunday it will become an affiliate of The CW Network and begin carrying the network’s lineup from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday through Friday. “It was an easy decision to partner with The CW,” said Neal Sabin, vice chairman of the privately owned Chicago-based company. “This gives us the opportunity for CW26 to air original, scripted, primetime programming six nights a week, as well as launching the new daytime talk show, ‘Tamron Hall’ [at 4 p.m. weekdays].” Since 2016 The CW Network has been airing on Fox-owned WPWR-Channel 50. For 10 years before that, CW programming aired on Tribune Broadcasting WGN-Channel 9. The U will shift to Weigel’s subchannel WCUU-Channel 26.2.

They've come a long way since the black-and-white, poor signal days of Mulqueen's Kidde-a-Go-Go, the original Soul Train, and The Stock Market Observer.
