Weigel buys KYAZ

Weigel Broadcasting is purchasing KYAZ/51 from HC2 Station Group. Online article currently behind a paywall, but purchase agreement is here: https://licensing.fcc.gov/cdbs/CDBS...?appn=101822630&qnum=5120&copynum=1&exhcnum=1

No word on what Weigel will do with KYAZ, but I suspect the Azteca America programming might be gone, or shifted to a subchannel elsewhere. KYAZ currently runs eight subchannels.

Weigel is also buying KAZD/55 in DFW, plus a couple of stations in Arizona.

Part of Wigel's overall grand plan to get MeTv off the Diginet channels and onto the 0-100 channel lineups on Cable and Satellite. In this case, Channel 2 on Comcat, and 51 on Houston DirecTV and Dish. Azteca America might replace MeTV on KPRC 2.2

There will probably be a number of subchannel shuffles in Houston due to station sales, as well as the implementation of ATSC 3.0. I'm really curious to see what Weigel does with KYAZ.

KUBE is under new ownership and could still make some changes.

And keep an eye on KZJL. Estrella Media is selling KMPX in DFW, and I suspect KZJL might be next on the block. Any deal would likely involve an agreement to continue carrying Estrella TV on a subchannel (as in the DFW sale) but we could see other changes there as well.

Weigel purchase of KYAZ closed today (1/4) so changes may happen shortly. For now Azteca America is still on 51.1, with the rest of the subchannels consisting of two Vietnamese programmers, two religious outlets, two infomercial channels, and BeIN XTRA sports.

According to a notice and article on the KPRC-TV website, ME-TV will move to KYAZ 51.1 on March 29. Meanwhile Start-TV will move from 2.4 to 2.2. No word on whether anything new will pop up on 2.4.

Not sure when it happened, but KYAZ has dropped all seven of its subchannels. Just running the main 51.1 right now. We’ll see if any are re-added with new programming in the near future after the switch to ME-TV on Monday 3/29.

Still curious if Azteca will wind up on another channel.

Also noticed that Restauracion TV is gone from KUBE 57.5; now running a “channel for lease” graphic.

Weird situation Monday morning. On Comcast Xfinity the KYAZ channel slots (616/1051) are now running Me-TV. However OTA Channel 51.1 is still Azteca, and the TOHID still shows 51.1. Still nothing on the previous .2 through .8 subchannels.

Either the OTA switch has yet to happen, or Weigel is keeping the same physical channel for Azteca, and perhaps using a new virtual channel. In that case it would still show up as 51.1 on a set that hasn't been rescanned. But where would Me-TV be?

Meanwhile Start-TV made its move from 2.4 to 2.2. The 2.4 subchannel is now running a graphic redirecting viewers to the new channel. We'll see if something new pops up on 2.4 in the near future.

BTW VietTV which had been on 51.5 has moved to KQHO 27.6, according to the VietTV website.

Update: After finding that nothing on Channel 51 was decoding on my OTA set, I did a rescan which revealed Me-TV on 51.1 and Azteca on 51.3. Weigel must have changed all the physical channels. The "missing" subchannels are now gone. Nothing on 51.2; I would guess something is planned for that--why would they skip over it?

VietTV has now appeared on KUBE 57.11, so they are back on a full power station. The programming that had been on that subchannel has moved to the recently vacated 57.5.
