Weigel & WJJA

I know there was a thread about Weigel suing Kinlow over WJJA and the big question as to why they wanted it.

I'm not 100% sure but I think I figured out why.

I just took out my indoor off air antenna for the first time since last year and noticed Channel 41 not just being WMLW anymore. I can get both WMLW and WOCH-CA Chicago (which just moved from Channel 28 to 41 due to WTMJ DT) They mix together in some positions, if you adjust the antenna you can get just WOCH and just WMLW, etc.

I don't know if the southern counties matter that much to WMLW but if they did want to put WMLW's programming on 49 then its more then likely WOCH is the reason why.<P ID="signature">______________

I don't know what their current wattage is, but there are 3 Apps for WOCH-CA on 41, but the app for this gets approved, here's what the wattage would be:
Effective Radiated Power (ERP): 110. kW ERP
ERP below Horizontal Plane (Beam Tilt): 331. kW ERP
Antenna Height Above Average Terrain: - meters HAAT
Antenna Height Above Mean Sea Level: 536.4 meters AMSL
Antenna Height Above Ground Level: 355.7 meters AGL

That pattern will cover a good part of the Chicago market, and would likely interfere with WMLW-LP in Racine & Kenosha Counties.<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by dave73 on 04/01/06 07:11 AM.</FONT></P>

I haven't asked the folks at Weigel as the matter is in litigation and it is unlikely that they would comment.

My guess (and it is strictly that) is that because WJJA is a "full service" station, acquiring it would give Weigel both an analog and a digital channel during the transition period. WMLW is a "Class A" station, and is therefore given some degree of frequency protection, even though it transmits with low-power. WYTU-LP does not have the same status. -LP's and -CA's have to decide when to make a transition to digital, but do not get a second channel with which to make the transition.

I have no idea if Weigel intended to switch one of its current stations to channel 49, or if they intended to start a new station. WYTU-LP would seem to be a logical choice - and it would be the first full service hispanic station in the area. All of this is only conjecture.
