Weird Q about KBAY circa 1975....

Thought I should visit the SF board for this.

A question about the authenticity of a bit in 2004's STARSKY & HUTCH (the film, not the TV show)...

There was a bit in the film where a radio DJ ID the station as KBAY 94.5 over Chicago's "Old Days."

I'm doublechecking facts for a paper for a Media class here in Miami. hads to sit through the film, and since I'm a radio geek, the calls and freq. stuck out like a sore thumb, well to me they did. Sadly no one else got the joke in my class.

I wanted to know some background heritage on KBAY in its, well, heyday.

They've been soft rock for as far back as I can remember - possibly a "beautiful" music station before that. Their best chance for high visiility came a couple of years ago, when they simulcast on 93.3 in San Francisco, but they never made a ratings dent in the Lite Rock leader - KOIT. 94.5 is K-Bay's current frequency, but they were assigned at least one other frequency - I remember 100 point something, though I may be off. The south Bay frequencies were shuttled around quite a bit between stations in the late 90s. Perhaps KM, or one of the other moderators can remember...

K-BAY 100.3 was a South Bay institution for years playing elevator music. They transitioned to soft rock (whatever the hell that is) while on 100.3, then changed frequencies in the late 90s on a northward move to San Francisco. KBRG is now on 100.3 doing Radio Romantica, while KBAY is at 94.5 and licensed to Gilroy. KBRG has a much better signal than KBAY with it's funky directional pattern.

The old KBAY at 100.3 used to run a liner that said "from Monterey Bay to San Pablo Bay..." and they weren't kidding. Arguably the best footprint of any FM in the Bay Area. Seems like they had 14,500 watts at 3800 ft. on Loma Preita. The present 94.5 out of Gilroy is a popgun by comparison.

I was VERY interested in K-BAY as a young one and they were right, that station had some reach. It is a grandfathered FCC license. Not sure how far back it dates, I'll let someone else touch that.

Anyone remember 94.5 when it was KWSS with Kelly and Kline. So that dates me, but that was the radio I grew up to and it made me want to work in "the biz".

I DO remember Kelly & Kline on X-100, and thought they were great. My adult daughter (just a little kid at the time) still remembers the words to a couple of the song parodies K&K did.

Wasn't 94.5 the home of a classic rock station a while back (KUFX)? I remember listening to it from time to time when I lived in the salinas area.

Yeah, The KBAY Calls were on 100.3 fm until about 1997 when it fell down the dial to 94.5, in fall 2003 it became KBAA as the station went to 93.3 which is well known for it's inability to hold a format for more than 3 years as "The New K-BAY 93/3 & 94/5 The Station That picks you up and makes you feel good, All Day Long!" Then in '04 93.3 lost KBAY and became KRZZ which left 94.5 with the KBAA call and with in the hour got back the KBAY calls and re branded them selfs as "FM 94.5 is THE NEW Fifteen in a row while you work station" later to: "The South K-Bay's Soft Rock 94.5 FM
