Weird Signal on 740 AM during the day and night time

Hi,
For the past four months I've been getting a weird digital almost high speed rtty type of signal
on 740am in the day time and at night which covers up CHWO at times and makes it almost
impossible to hear. I always had CHWO booming in after sunset through sun rise year round.
The signal I am now hearing is constantly on. I've tried it in several locations around hear in
Copake, NY on the CT & MA boarders. I normaly listen on my Yaesu FRG-8800 with a long wire.
I never had recieve problems like this signal before. I also have heard it up the dial I think in the
1300khz range but can't remember. Does anyone know what this is and has anyone else heard it?
Thanks,
Rich

I would be willing to bet it is IBOC related especially if you are listening on some high end equipment, which are more susceptible to this type of interference. I work about 10 miles south of Copake in Millerton. I tried listening to 740 Toronto on my standard issue car radio, and they came in loud and clear with very little interference ( especially for AM ) in fact they almost sounded like a local station .I checked them on my trip home and there was very little fading in and out , this was at night . They sounded fine in Hyde Park where I live also. During the day I get a very weak signal on 740. I should be passing through Copake at night soon; I will try to remember to listen in then to see if the interference is something local.

Thanks for the info. And thanks for checking out the signals for me when you can.
I thought it might me iboc but I thought that iboc didn't remain on at night. I could
be wrong. I need to get a digital reciever anyway. I am interested to see what I could
get here on am and if iboc probagates like regular am dx. Would be fun. I never heard
iboc or dtv yet but am looking forward to. I don't like that analog tv is stopping in 2 years.
I restore antique tube radios and tv's and am not an iboc or dtv fan. But that's progress.
I still have AM740 CHWO to listen to though and am happy I can still get it and on line as
well with streaming.
Thanks Again,
Rich

If it sounds like RTTY data it's not IBOC. IBOC would be a hash or rushing noise, more or less similar to what you hear when tuned to a FM frequency with no station.

Some stations do seem to have occasional permission for nighttime IBOC tests. I wouldn't expect it to go on for more than a day or two though. Of course, in two weeks nighttime IBOC does become legal.
