Weird

Weird. All of a sudden without warning on my COX System which is based in Meriden, Connecticut TRU-TV (COURT TV) moved to Channel 62 knocking off Turner Classic Movies. TRU-TV's former spot Channel 71 is now vacant. Usually when COX moves or deletes a channel on their Analog lineup they make 1/2 dozen other changes, but this is the only change they made.

The change has not yet been made on TV.YAHOO.COM, TVGUIDE.COM, or The TV Guide Channel. Meanwhile at ZAP2IT.COM there are no channels listed for 62 or 71. The line-up on COX.COM/NEWENGLAND has not been changed either and it still show a line-up that went into effect in November 2007, which is when they added some services to the digital lineup.

Same thing happened with Comcast in South Jersey. TCM is now only on the digital channels. Just another way for cable to force you to cough up more cash to convert to digital. I miss TCM but not enough to spend all that money to upgrade. Cable is becoming more expensive yet what they offer is worth less and less. Cable is doing to itself what radio did to itself 20 years ago, forgot the program and focused on the bottom line. With all the alternatives to cable (satellite, internet, cheap DVDs) I wonder what cable will be like in 20 years.

With most cable systems, the digital upgrade is not a whole lot more. Perhaps they're trying to get rid of the last analog box holdouts to cut down on the bandwidth.

Still, quite a shame they're moving good channels like TCM to the digital tier and keeping crap channels on analog. That sounds a bit heavy-handed.

In Chicago last July Comcast went 100% digital. They give each household one free converter box. Which means if you plug your cable into a cable ready set it no longer gets anything.

I know when they would bust the box in my building you could plug in your cable and get some over the air stations and shopping channels free. (Till the cable company came and repaired the box) Now they don't bother fixing the box because unless you got a digital converter box it won't work.

I am assuming the new digital TVs have a tuner card to, but I don't take cable anymore so I don't know how that works.

That is weird.
Usually when a cable or sattelite provider is going to move a channel, they put tiny (fine) white print at the bottom of the screen for a few days or even a week or so indicating where the channel is moving to, just to let people know what's going on.

I remember having to walk up close to my tv to read the message the last time my cable provider moved a channel.

Both the FCC and CRTC should make it law that people be informed of any such change at least 3 or four days in advance of the change, and that it be easier to read.

The channel should also be available in more than one channel spot durring that time for those who do not wish to watch a channel with a notice at the bottom of the screen.

Not really. I don't mean to defend the cable companies (especially comcast), however, there systems are out of room, and they have to move channels off analog inorder to add new channels and/or HD channels. For every space an analog channel takes up, they can fit 4 digital channels or 2 HD channels.

Cable (and especially comcast) put almost all their eggs in ondemand in relation to competing with satellite. However they now realize people want HD programing, and cable is now playing catch up to directv. As a result, expect massive channel moves this upcoming year, so they can try to catch up by adding more HD channels.

Not sure, but I think they are required. I know comcast always puts a notice in the newspaper, yet almost never does anything else such as a statement on the channel itself/ on the cable bill. Altough comkcast does indeed have the channel on both the new and old for a while. For example, court tv/ tru tv is moving to ch 187. Its already there, but its still on the old channel of ch78 aswell. Eventually they will remove it from there.

A couple months ago Time Warner Cable took away 2 channels that were on regular cable ESPN Classic and The Travel Channel and placed them on digital. Then where those 2 channels were Time Warner replaced it with VH-1 Classic and Noggin/The N.

Now about Cox Cable. What are they going to do with channels 64, 65, 66 which used to be HBO, Cinemax, Showtime. Move CNN Headline News, TV Land, Travel Channel and HSN down. I know Cox has some digital channels that Time Warner places on regular cable like Oxygen, WE, Style. But I don't care about those channels. Also Time Warner ofters TMC on regular cable still.

In West TN Charter has begun the process of changing basic channels to digital. They recently changed GSN and G4 to digital, although they are still in the same channel locations they were before in the basic lineup at channels 38 and 59. They also moved WE from basic channel 25 to digital channel 135. They did do a good job of notifying in advance, both with a letter in the mail and also with a trailer on the Weather Channel during local forecasts.

A Charter technician was at my house today to do some work and I asked him what their plans were for changing to digital. He said that all the basic channels would be converted to digital by this time next year, and that we would need to have a converter box on the remaining analog sets. He didn't say anything about if any would be free.

Thanks, guys, for affirming my reasons for having DirecTV. $50 bucks a month and I have over 140 channels to choose from, plus the locals. When they move a channel, it doesn't matter. I just change to the other transponder and it's there! Of course, I watch probably less than a third of those channels (and another third is XM music channels), but it's better than the seven years I spent dealing with rabbit ears, and NOT EVER wanting to deal with Charter/Comcast/X Cable Company AGAIN!

More

Again without warning. Gone are the Leased Access Channels - 67 and 96. The TV Guide Network says they moved to 71 and 72, but there's nothing on 71 and 72. Thinking that maybe 71 and 72 could be channel numbers for customers who have a box (like how HSN is on 79 with a box and 95 without), I checked every other channel and still couldn't find the Leased Access Channels.

I used to have Cox Cable (Newington), but we switched to DISH. I used to love COX's line-up, but now the analog line-up is terrible. I like Comcast's line-up where they tried to group together certain channels. I believe that the shopping channels should be at the end on the 70 tier. ShopNBC for example shouldn't be on 31, a sports channel like ComCast sports/FSN should be there.

I remember when WSBK and WWOR were on Channels 10 and 19 in the Manchester market. The basic channels should all be local choices.

Finally, I agree that Channels 64-66 should be filled. I miss the days of just plain cable when the channels went up to Channel 78 (that was Bravo! back then) and you had all the movie channels and Pay per view on the line-up. I don't care for new technology.

Thats cool no one watched the wasted channels taken by those channels. Does Cox carry Shop NBC still? I remember they did on 32 then dropped it for NESN. Cox should add Speed and VS back on regular cable. Also put Golf Channel on regular. Their not that exclusive of networks. Just saying that as Time Warner offers those three channels on regular cable. Also maybe Cox Cable is going to add SNY the Mets network who knows. Cox needs to place their channels together like Comcast did. All kid channels together, music channels, news networks, etc which they already kind of have as Disney and Nick are together so are MSNBC, CNBC, and FOX News also the sports networks are mostly together other then FSN New England which isn't down where ESPN, ESPN2, YES, and NESN are.

Agreed. I switched to Directv 3 years ago and never looked back. Comcast has terrible quality and is way overpriced compared to satellite. I looked outside the other day and can't believe how many dishes have gone up on my block over the past 6 months - especially now that Directv carries most networks in HD.

Actually, the combined effort of CW 20 and FOX 61 is supposed to carry the over-the-air Yankees games for the 2008 season.

You know what? This is why I hate that duopoly. They always gotta split the damn games between both stations. It's a bunch of freaking B-S.

Although Channels 8/59 share the Huskies; the Yankees Games were not shared.

Guess that means I'm gonna start having to listen to the games on WPOP.

So I guess WTXX and WTIC traded UCONN for Yankees from WCTX. I remember when Red Sox were on FOX 25 Boston WTXX carried them for a little while then WFSB Channel 3 aired the games from FOX 25 and covered up the FOX 25 logo with Red Sox. Those were good days.
