WEJL Tower

Yes. The Chopper landed on the roof of the Globe, the WEJL tower lit ,Santa exited...and we all ran in and saw Christmas Land or whatever it was called. I kind of remember it moving to the airport in later years( a non-event), but it was the roof of the Globe, the drama of the bell helicopter setting down, the turn on of the WEJL tower in a synergy of schmaltz that I so fondly remember.
Knowing what I know now, it's funny that up on the Times building was one of "us" with a cord in his or her hand, literally plugging that giant string of 480 lights into an outlet at the base of the tower.Talk about " don't look behind the curtain" Haha!!
Happy Thanksgiving to all reader's and poster's!!

I'm sure it could be done, but it would be expensive and it would take away from Christmas... but, wouldn't it be cool for The Times~Tribune to invest in LED or fiber optics for the lights. The WEJL tower could turn green for St. Patrick's Day, purple for Easter, pink for breast cancer awareness and the Race for the Cure, orange for Thanksgiving, white for New Year's Eve, gold for when an Irish Catholic Democrat wins another elective office, etc.

That's actually an excellent idea that would bring that Scranton landmark unmatched attention. Tower climbers would be the biggest part of the expense. The bulbs are relatively inexpensive.

I forgot red for Valentine's Day. The top of the Empire State Building in NYC glows in different colors, depending on the occasion. I do realize the Empire State Building and the WEJL tower are vastly different animals.

What a great idea. I wonder if they would go for it. You should give someone in their marketing department a call.

A-hahahahaha! Hahahahaha! "I wonder if they would go for it?!?" A-hahahahaha! Yeah, they'll go for it, as long as it doesn't cost a red cent.

Although...maybe I'm being too harsh. I understand they did spend a middle managers yearly salary on that cheesed out painting on the back of the Scranton Times building. Okay, maybe they WOULD go for it, if the LED's can be made to scroll a message and they can sell space on it.

That could be like our New Year's Ball drop...instead...the lights go up, so the countdown starts from 10 and goes on, as it gets closer to 0, more and more of the lights turn on from the bottom up, at 0 hour, the red light on the top comes on (and or) that's when there is a bunch of fireworks going off.............or idea 2 is: the opposite, the lights go from the top to the bottom, and when it reaches the bottom, KABOOM the fireworks goes off....hmmm
