Welcome Back! KDWN goes full circle

When Beasley first bought KDWN I posted that KDWN will go back to brokered programming during the weekday daytime hours in the future and that Beasley should have kept KDWN programming close to what Mr Williams and Claire Reese had been making money on for years. I received a lot of nasty negative comments from Beasley employees (now former Beasley employees) and the usual narcissistic ego driven know it alls who live on these boards telling me how wrong I was in the most vile way. With that being said I am proud to tell you that today Monday July 25,2011 KDWN had on at 9am a Lawyer who brokered that time slot yapping about probate and at 10am KDWN brokered time to some quack Doctors stuttering on about medical issues pertaining to their practice. So today I salute Beasley Management with the lyrics of John Sebastian's Welcome Back ............................."Welcome back
Your dreams were your ticket out
Welcome back
To that same old place that you laughed about
Well the names have all changed since you hung around
But those dreams have remained and they've turned around
Who'd have thought they'd lead ya
(who'd have thought they'd lead ya)
Back here where we need ya
(back here where we need ya)
Yeah, we tease him a lot 'cause we got him on the spot
Welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back

Welcome back
We always could spot a friend, welcome back
Welcome back
And I smile when I think how you must have been
And I know what a scene you were learning in
Was there something that made you come back again
And what could ever lead ya
(what could ever lead ya)
Back here where we need ya
(back here where we need ya)
Yeah, we tease him a lot cause we got him on the spot
Welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back

And I know what a scene you were learning in
Was there something that made you come back again
And what could ever lead ya
(what could ever lead ya)
Back here where we need ya
(back here where we need ya)
Yeah, we tease him a lot cause we got him on the spot
Welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back

Yeah, we tease him a lot
Welcome back, welcome back
'Cause we got him on the spot
Welcome back, welcome back

Yeah, we tease him a lot cause we got him on the spot
Welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If KDWN really wants to go full circle they can bring back old hosts like Ken Stahl and Pete "the part time guy". Then they can open up the phone likes inbetween infomercial segments so that angry old folks can rant against ilegal immigration.

If they really want to go retro they could dig up the old "720 K-DAWN" jingle. and play it between infomercials.

I liked "Truman", who was on in the morning 9-Noon. He made alot of sense and talked about the upcoming economic foreclosure mess that was on the horizon (around 2006). He was right on with his predictions about real estate. There was also "Jim Dallas" who hosted a show in the afternoon. He is still on KDWN doing traffic reports.
And yes, I am kinda nostalgic for the K-DAWN jingle. Maybe they should bring it back.

I left KDWN about April 1976 and was the graveyard board operator at Number 1 Main Street and have very fond memories of Mr. Williams and his extensive microphone collection and the annual christmas decorations enveloping the offices that Claire would do. We had Jack London choosing the music and it was all on cart and I remember playing Paloma Blanca, 99 miles to L.A., Break away, and of course rolling many reel to reel tapes of The Roy Masters Show. Thats when I would run to the Golden Gate Casino to pick up my lunch. We always had a engineer at the transmitter site since it was a directional 3 tower array and remote operation was not permitted at that time. Tru Hawkins would relieve me in the morning and he always made it before his lead in song would end at the start of His shift. We always joined Network News at the top of the hour. Unfortunately I had decided to leave Radio in 1976, KDWN and KXTZ and persue other avenues. It was a magical time and I was always greeted with open arms everytime I would show up to visit. We were always included in the call from the Nevada Test Site when the atomic bomb testing would occur. Thats another story as I ran to the top of the Union Plaza and experianced the two shock waves from the top floor. That was scarey magical.

Here it is over 35 years later and Roy Masters is still on KDWN. I realize his show is syndicated and he probably pays for the time. But still Roy holds the record for being on one station for the longest time than anyone in LV radio history.

With the down turn in the economy, the old Plaza Hotel KDWN demographic might be tapped out. The Plaza is remodeling and looking for younger people. Does a fifty something still have the money for bingo, health products and infomercial stuff? Given it's signal, people would often come from out of town to "check out the Plaza" becasue of late night KDWN talk radio.

It did work well for years and in hindsight it did provide a public service.

People would call in and say "such and such a street was blocked off" then someone would call in and say they were a cop and "they had a jumper on a building."

So they got the information out in a way.

Other than drive time it does not seem kxnt or kdwn have much of a news operation and 670 just runs national news feeds.
