welcome back, Radio Discussions - ONE request...

I'm glad that Radio Discussions is back - but I got ONE request (I'm posting this on the NYC board because that is my PRIMARY area of radio interest - and because the TIO board is STILL closed to new threads.... :D )

I'm hoping that this NYC board DON'T turn into a groupie board - I am a student of NYC radio and in most cases I think I know what I'm talking about - but what i was seeing with the old board are groupies and let's face it - people who just didn't know what the heck they were talking about (they just pretended they did.... :D ) - or that they were slamming people WITHOUT knowledge of the ENTIRE situation.

Thank you for letting me post here - and I DO appreciate those who KNOW what they are talking about.... :D

there's a certain message board for that, but it's moderated with an iron fist....and to me, that makes it rather unpleasant. I like this board better because you have the actual people who listen to radio, as well, as possibly a few industry proffesionals, able to speak their mind however they want. it's all seen from a certain point of view ;o)

It's human nature for all of us to think we know what we're talking about. Everyone thinks his or her perspective is dead center. Everyone believes he or she knows "the truth." In reality there's seldom a single truth.

The radio insiders know the nuts and bolts of the industry but that doesn't mean their conclusions are always correct, especially in today's rapidly changing environment. One would hope these folks listen to the listeners as well as study the business.

Seems to me there's room for a variety of opinions as long as they're expressed in a way that's rational and non-combative.

I know what you're talking about - said iron fist has NEVER let me log on there - their loss.... :D

Something ALL users of Radiodiscussions.com have to realize is there are 2 types of posters here.

1.) Posters who work (or have worked) in the industry. They understand the inside workings of a radio station. They understand why some decisions are made in managing radio stations, that do not always fit our personal taste. But most importantly, we understand it as a business. And we have come to value successful broadcasting, even if it is not our cup of tea.

2.) Posters who are simply listeners (sometimes passionate listeners). They don't relate to radio as a business, nor should they. They know what they like, they know what turns them off. We shouldn't expect them to understand the nuances of the broadcasting industry. These are people we program to. Sometimes they post overgeneralized opinions ("All talkradio sucks except for Curtis and Kuby!") We should look at that as an example of how the public might perceive the product that we put out.

Those of us in the industry have to have patience and understand the mindset of the listeners and their posts.

Listeners have to understand what we in the industry already see, that broadcasting is made up of lots of different tastes and business models.

Very well said, Wimmex!

I think the biggest reason for the divide is that radio insiders see the advertisers as their customers, which they are. The listeners see themselves as the customers and they hate the advertisers. In reality neither group is 100% correct -- it's more complex than that -- it's a triangle. It would be great to see:

3.) Posters who are advertisers.

It's good to see this board coming back in full force, let's hope it will be better than the last time. I've been absent since the site closed down in early January, but I'm glad we're back. Good luck on this site and keep it going.

I dunno about that.. I used to love listening for the commercials back when they where fun and funny. now they are mostly scam ads and ads for boner pills :)

But there are still some legitimate spot advertisers. It would be good to hear from them.

If I had a product to sell I'd have a few questions for the radio sales reps:

- How will my message have any credibility when it's preceded and followed by obvious frauds like "The Bible Code?"
- I'm a car dealer, why won't you at least give me a few minutes separation from my competitors?
- Why do I keep hearing ads on your station that are out of date? Don't you people care about your air product, your listeners, your advertisers?
- Last year you told me that Johnny Radiohost was the key to delivering my message. Now he's been replaced by syndication. Why shouldn't I cancel my contract?

... to mention a few.

great to see the board back. Nice of Radio Insight to let us on during RD absence. Would be nice if both boards are very active. I enjoy checking both.

You're soooo right about that other board and it's moderator. That guy is on one huge ego trip. He's clearly a wannabe broadcaster. You can tell by his weekly podcast where he tries to sound like a "radio guy" and pontificates for about 20 minutes, repeating himself like mad. Any time I ever heard him on those clips, I always thought to myself "this guy has never had a program director or mentor to teach him how to tighten things up". lol

didn't he become a dentist or something? Seems anytime I've visited it seems more like a radio board for nostalgia. Seems they're constantly discussing topics about CBS, Oldies, WABC, etc. Not much there ever holds my interest. Seems like the board more for senior citizens. No offense to anyone intended.

Sounds like you are referring to a small market station. (Out of date spots are usually an example of an understaffed or a badly run station.)

In any event....most stations DO separate competitors.

I agree with andreajesus and she is someone who's knowledgeable about New York radio.

I am also glad that Radio Discussions is back up and this board I see as a supplement to other boards

Thanks,
