WELD 690 AM (Fisher, WV)

I'm getting this station on 690 in Vermilion, OH as I type this. Either their nighttime 14 watts is really getting out or else it's still on day or critical hours power. Nice oldies station but don't remember ever hearing them this far past sunset. Anyone else in the area hearing it?

Nope. Hearing CSN sports from Canada. Really strong on my portable Grundig G4000A. Northeastern NC.

Here in Lexington, KY I am not hearing WELD, but I am clearly hearing WIST-690 from New Orleans right now. Have they gone to their Non-Directional 106 watts yet ?? I am also hearing some very faint Spanish in the background.

It is sure nice that WLW has turned off their I-NOISE which now makes 690 and 710 "DX-able" again.

Rig here by the way...Icom IC-746 (original version) using an Alpha Delta DX-A Twin Sloper Antenna designed for 160, 80 and 40 meter ham bands. The DX-A is mounted from the apex of my 50' tower.

With CKGM nulled, Fox Sports Radio with Spanish music underneath. Probably WJOX Birmingham. No oldies. Also a het, maybe 5 kHz?

I've kept it parked on 690 for a while ...no WJOX here that I can say for sure, but Montreal is now mixing in with WIST and the Spanish signal.

Still hearing WELD here in Vermilion, OH - just heard 'playing the greatest hits of all time'. Not as strong as earlier but then again there seems to be more electrical noise.

I was pulling them in back around June/July one evening about 11:30PM here in Central VA. There was a huge, nasty thunderstorm literally just to my South by a mile or so. I heard them for about 35 minutes or so, then never again. I was shocked too when I saw the 14 watts nighttime.

Before 690 signed back on in Montreal I used to get them up here. I sent them a reception report back in October 2010 because I was curious to see if they really were running only 14 watts when I got them. They said they switched to night power at 8:45 in October, but their FCC listing has 6:45 EDT listed as sunset time. So they may have been running critical hours power of 500 watts although I thought this was only supposed to be used 2 hours before local sunset and not 2 hours after.

I've heard them daytime here in Thornville, Ohio, when WLW's IBOC is off. I'm not particularly close to Fisher (maybe 200 miles or more judging from a map), but I've heard the ID and there's no other 690 even remotely close that could get here during the day without skywave help.

WELD was blasting in tonight at 8:10 PM EDT into Lexington, KY with oldies. Last night, I just could not hear them. Right now, they're probably on D or CH power not their authorized Nighttime Flea Power.

Do not hear them here but they are in a similar direction with Montreal from here. Was hearing WOKV before sunset.

I'm in NE NC.

According to the FCC website, critical hours apply only to sunrise to 2 hours after sunrise and 2 hours before sunset to sunset as you mentioned. Last night I was hearing them until 9:35pm ET when I suddenly starting hearing Spanish, presumably CMEC/Santa Clara, Cuba (Radio Progreso). I was also hearing Cubans on 570, 670, 870 at the same time. Sunset time for Fisher, WV yesterday was 6:55pm ET.

Have they made some recent changes to their transmitter facility?
Recently (within the past year or so) I started picking them up regularly in Pittsburgh.
Had never heard of them before.

I like the call letters. "Catch our Spark". "Draw a bead on us" "You'll be stuck to us permanently"
Lots of promo possibilities.

The post-sunset power levels that were issued in 2007 for many AM stations were later retracted by the FCC, because the software they used to compute them was flawed. Many, if not most of those stations were issued PSSA levels that were drastically reduced from what they had been running since the mid 80s.

I would guess that WELD could be running under the PSSA levels it was originally issued, which could very well be higher than 60-some watts. You won't find those on the FCC website...in fact if the original copy issued to the station was lost, the only way to get a replacement is to visit the Commission and dig through piles of microfiche records.
