Closed Investigation
Complaints against WELE radio
Ormond Beach Police have concluded the criminal investigation of several recent reports filed against the WELE radio station. OBPD initiated numerous possible fraud cases after local media reported that the radio station had closed its doors and was no longer responding to complaints of those who were unhappy with their purchases from the station. The complaints focused on citizen’s belief that they were victims of fraud perpetrated by the station management who they felt knowingly sold worthless vacation packages or misrepresented the restrictions on those packages.
Ormond Beach police investigators, after consultation with the State Attorney’s Office, have determined that no criminal charges are warranted in any of the reported cases. For criminal charges to apply, police would have to prove that agents of the radio station knowingly sold packages that were worthless or knowingly misrepresented the packages which resulted in monetary gain to the business. No such proof was found in any of the cases. On the contrary, police determined that the radio station did in fact have business relationships with companies providing vacation accommodations or travel services and had good faith belief that the vacation packages were redeemable as advertised.
While there are still unsatisfied customers with unresolved grievances, police consider those to be civil matters between the station and its customers and not rising to the level of criminal activity. Station management has stated that they are making every effort to resolve the grievance of any of their customers not happy with their purchases.
