WELF in Glen Ellyn

My dad was a sign painter. He took me with him all over Chicagoland.

One day, he had a job in a mini-mall on Roosevelt Road. I would estimate this was around 1964 or 5. The END store in that mall was WELF radio. Not sure if THAT was the "main studio" as the only antenna was a tv antenna on top of an equipment rack. The mall location may have been some kind of "remote studio."

The equipment was quite sparse, and included a Gates "Studioette" console and 2 turntables. There was a board mic and another mic on a long cord.

There was a rather large guy there, who was very accomodating to a geeky 12 or 13 year old kid (me).

Does anyone know anything about WELF, who owned it, and what happened to it? The internet also talks about WELG in Elgin, who evidently met a similar fate as WELF.

I wonder what frequency it operated on?

My dad was in radio for many years in Chicago. We lived in Wheaton. I remember Dad telling us that a fellow broadcaster Dick Caughlin (sp?)started/was starting WELF in Glen Ellyn. My recollection is Caughlin may have been with WGN. It was the early 60's as another person had posted.

Interesting.

Dick Coughlin was a wgn-tv announcer and host of "Bugs Bunny an d Friends, weeknights at 6:30pm. Thanks.

I remember Dick Coughlin on WGN-TV in the 50s & 60s. In the 50s He used to host a cartoon show featuring Bugs Bunny cartoons.

Couglin's tv trademark was wearing flannel shirt. I don't believe Dick is related to John Coughlin of ch 2.

Lots of chicago radio talent was involved in station ownership; Howard Miller in Kewanee, Jack Brickhouse in Geneva, Dick Lashbroook in Pekin and LaSalle, Mal Bellairs in Crystal Lake, Dex Card in Washington State, and John Harrington in Michigan (forgot the town) were all owners after their Chicago announcing careers. John Felthouse, a wbbm engineer also was an owner in Rensselaer, IN (where he and I were competitors until I bought him out).

I didn't know that Dex Card owned stations in the state of Washington. I knew he owned a few in this area including an FM in Kenosha which I believe was WJZQ.

Dex Card used to own WLIP (AM 1050) and WLIP-FM (95.1) in Kenosha. He was the owner when the call letters were changed from WLIP-FM to WJZQ.

I thought that Howard Miller at one time was the owner of WGSB Geneva (AM 1480).

Larry Langford, who was a newsman at WVON, WIBC, WFYR, WDAI, WIND, and WMAQ, now owns WGTO Cassopolis, Michigan (AM stereo 910) and WDOW Dowagiac, Michigan (AM 1440). Presently he's director of media affairs for the Chicago Fire Department.

I thought the stations that Dex Card owned were in Wisconsin. Thanks.

OOPS. Right about Dex. It was JJ Jefferies I was thinking about, who owns WLOB 1310 AM News/Talk, Portland, Maine
WJJB 96.3 FM, 1440 (WJAE)/900 AM Sports station known as The Big Jab carrying Boston Red Sox baseball, Boston Celtics basketball and Portland Pirates ice hockey.
WPEI 95.9 FM WGEI 95.5 FM, WEEI Multicast. There.

J.J. still owns stations in Maine then right?

I remember on WFYR when he was known as Lawrence Langford.
