WELI HD

I wonder where Fred put the gear - I don't think he's got all that much room where the transmitters are unless he got rid of a boat anchor.

Ed: Does Cumulus have any plans of taking WICC HD?

The last time I was up at WELI it was many many years ago.
There was a MW5 as there back up. I think the main was a BE AM 6A
which I think can be upgraded to do HD.
Currently there are no plans to do HD on WICC.
If we were to do HD I would have to float a new Transmitter out to the beach, plus the antenna system needs a good going over.

I was up there about a year or two ago. I know Fred as the BE and I think a Gates/Harris unit as well, but I think he also has some "golden oldie" there too, which is why I would think he might be cramped for room.

I figured it would be a "fun" job getting another transmitter out to the sight, considering the lack of a bridge. I heard Harris was going to stop supporting the SX series transmitters which is another reason I asked.

The SX1A Transmitter has been very reliable. That Transmitter went into service January of 1990 and it has only failed about three times in all these years. Good box
My back up Transmitter is a Gate/Harris BC1H1 with the solid state audio driver board. I think this was the last 1KW tube
Transmitter Harris produced, the next model was the MW 1 there first AM solid state rig.
Back when I worked at the old WNAB we had Collins Transmitters the main was a 20V3
and the back up was a 300 G two great boxes. When WNAB went out of business
and became WJBX in 1985 they sold off the 300 G to a Ham operator and installed the
Harris SX1A as there main. which I had taken care of also. getting back to WICC
when I started there we had a Nautel Ampfet 1. This Transmitter would like to trip out on VSWR faults for no reason at all, and eat mosfets now and then

LOL. I want to take a picture if you do that.

Seriously, could you use a helicopter to get a transmitter to the island? Many years ago an air conditioning system was installed in an New Haven building by helicopter.
