WELI Kite Fly?

What happened to the annual WELI Kite Fly that was started by ELI vets like Bud Finch, (Late)Ron Rohmer, Stan Shields, (Late)Thomas Michael Whalen, (On ELI/AVZ). I remember it was a wonderful community event every May at RTP?
Anyone have a clue?

Wow Video, you're really bringing this board to life, even though it's just about a certain building on Benham St. in Hamden.
I think KC 101 kept the kite fly going for a while, I doubt it's still on aynmore though.
I always wondered if it made any sense to be flying kites near those AM towers. :)

"Video" still works at RTP. He's one of only 3 that remain from the old days.
It's funny how some people can't let go of the past and continue to try and spread misery. But, they do say misery loves company.
This wonderful Kite Fly event he speaks of was eventually reduced to a dirty looking flea market full of carnies and hobo's. The last year I remember it was when Danny Ocean was the PD and they had 3 "vendors" actually one was an old lady who lived in the area who cleaned out her attic and held a tag sale.
The only refreshmant there was a push cart from dunkin donuts that was there to "promote" the new frozen drink....not much of a promotion as you had to pay for a sample.
None of the air staff showed up and it was just plain awful.
I think community events like stuff-a-bus are a lot better for KC 101 and the community and their listeners...Anything else Video"??
Wanna talk about when KCI would b'cast from new haven baseball games or how about the morning shows pie baking contest? Easter egg hunt anyone?
Get over it.

I recall when WELI had a Kite Fly in 2000 when I worked there briefly and can recall not being allowed to turn in to the RTP parking lot. Had to park my car in the lot of the school across the street for the duration of my shift. ::)

THANK YOU Justdave! It is clear that "video" has an agenda; an agenda of a personal nature. This is why not only should his posts not be taken seriously, they shouldn't be allowed on this site. They are a waste of time. Video is someone who joined radio-info 12 days ago, only to dredge up posts from 2 years ago. His posts are factless, baseless and useless. The Kite-fly dude? Seriously???

Dude, I haven't worked in radio since 2004. I left KCI/AVZ back in 1993 when they moved from studios in North Haven to Hamden. Nothing has really changed. KCI was falling down the elevator shaft then and they continue on the decline. And will until they change the format. AVZ is just a pc taking up closet space.

That "was" a great community event for close to 30 years. If it was promoted correctly there would still be a kite fly. ELI used to be about a station involved heavily in the community.

No agenda here. Just stating a few simple facts.

Just like to bring attention to broadcasting abortions whenever possible. It's important to learn from mistakes. And there were PD's at those stations that made too many to mention on here.

At its pinnacle, the New haven Register reported the Kite Fly drew upwards of 2000 people. Collectively do both stations have 2000 listeners? Okay...next question.

The last kite fly was about three years ago. Two years ago, there was supposed to be one but it was canceled due to the weather. Last year, WELI had an Anti-Illegal imigration rally instead of the kite fly. I think it's safe to say that the kite fly, like a real staff at RTP is gone for the foreseeable future.

Yes...WELI ...home to Ron Rohmer, a full news department, a full sales staff, a large promotions department that spent money on being local is now just another spot on the dial....and you can thank CC and plain lousy local management for killing it.

All now in the past tense. ;) Last one out, please remember to turn off the transmitter; uh, I mean lights. ;)

The Kite Fly! I was asking about it just last week when I was in New Haven visiting the rest of the family. Wondered if it was still held at all. Mom couldn't say. We found ourselves over in Hamden Saturday, so we drove by WELI. Tom Whalen was my dad. Very much enjoyed the Kite Fly the first few years it ran.

I was there for the original Kite Fly back in the early 70s. Ran the board for the announcer (don't remember who, could have been Gene Anthony) who was tethered to the studio via long mic cord. Well attended and organized event created by promotions director Les Thimmig. Several kites got stuck in the towers. There was a song called "Kites are Fun" that was the theme song for the event. I moved from CT to TX and never realized the event had continued on.

There's a name and a song from the past! Les went on to do news in 1978 (yes, the Natural 92 had a news department) at "laid back & mellow" WWYZ and did features for WOMN 1220 during that station's time with a women's-oriented format. YZ actually used to play "Kites Are Fun" by Free Design in the format. It's been out of print for decades. The WELI Kite Fly was a great idea. Giving people a direct connection to their radio station - what a faded concept!
