WELI Kite Fly?

Ah, the WELI Kite Fly.....

Ah, the memories..... Such a beautiful event..... Such a shame it doesn't happen anymore.....

You know, a long, lazy afternoon on the grounds of Radio Towers Park. You, your family, 1,996 other people...

If you close your eyes, you can almost hear the crowds... Feel the warmth of the sun on your face as a good gust of wind coming off Sacred Heart Academy Hill pushes your kite higher and higher... WELI playing "Anticipation" by Carly Simon and "Afternoon Delights" by The Starland Vocal Band through "M.A.S.H" horns in the backround... The smells and sounds of the carnival wafting through the property... Ahhhhh...

Idyllic.........

The other stuff at Kite Fly was great, too... Setting up for 4 days for 4 hours of family fun... Carnies living on the site for a week in tarp-tents behind the studios, leaving an incredible amount of garbage and human waste in brown paper bags in the woods... People flying kites with metalized string, (even though there were giant signs warning them not to do that, not to mention the 4 months of station promos running every hour with the same warning), then complaining that their hands "felt funny"... The time we had to hose down the wireless-mic rig because a certain PD/DJ decided to ride "The Spinner" until he vomited during a drop, live on KC101... The near-fist fights that occurred, because SOME people take kite flying a little too seriously, and felt THEIR kite was the highest... Insurance claims from people rolling ankles in the fields... Cleaning up after 2,000 people decided NOT to use the refuse containers that were placed every 15 yards on the property... That time that '80s band that had released an a-cappella record performed, and set off the alarm while blowing a joint in the men's room... And, my personal all-time favorite- Lowering the transmitter to 250 watts, so I could climb half-way up Tower 4, just past dusk, and remove the kite with the metalized string that had gotten wrapped up on the tower side-lights, and was throwing the night pattern off and sending the transmitter into VSWR...

Oh, yes... Brings a friggin' tear to my eye that we don't do it anymore... Thanks for the memories. I had almost forgotten how much I hated Kite Fly.

I always wondered about the mentality of kite flying around a bunch of AM towers :)

Whew! Glad you mentioned it was the WELI Kite Fly. For awhile there it sounded more like another station's live remotes at the Savin Rock Festival...without the kites and the transmitter sticks. ;D

By the by: If you ride one of those loop coasters and you get sick, do you throw down?

Since you put it that way, the idea of posting your kite on a station website is sounding a whole lot better! I'm sure the downside you describe so vividly is not the image WELI - or any other station I can think of - wants to convey. Maybe the Kite Fly should have been moved somewhere else, but it sounds more like its time had come and gone in these days of who's liable for what.
