WELI "Local" News strikes again

It was reported on WTNH this morning at 10:23 AM that 13-year-old Orange teen Isabella Oleschuk was found safe, after being missing since early Sunday. This was obviously a big and ongoing local story. As of 2:30 PM this afternoon, WELI was still reporting on their so called "local" news that she was still missing! What a joke of a local news station, compared to what it once was... :-[

My first clue that someone doesn't come from the New Haven area is when they pronounce the city "NEW Haven" instead of "New HAY-ven." But seriously, they really should take a long look at how they can regain credibility after lagging over four hours behind with major local breaking news in the middle of the day. The "News" Talk image is only half right, which is a shame since they have a good local morning show and a local sports presence. Growing up, WELI really was the "Sound of New Haven."

It's bad enough the canned news report was outdated by the time it ran at 2:30 PM - but it aired right in the middle of (possibly) WELI's most-listened-to show, Rush Limbaugh. That's got to leave a bruise.

For the record, AM 1220 WQUN is Quinnipiac University's commercially-licensed station. We have a full and very experienced news staff headed by News Director and morning anchor Greg Little. We have live local news weekdays top and the bottom of the hour from 6 a.m. through 6 p.m. We are a CBS News affiliate, offer two half-hour news interview programs on weekends, and regularly host newsmakers on live morning drive and afternoon programs.
Also, WQUN has won 24 awards for local news reporting and anchoring from the Associated Press. We also are affiliated with Metro News and Traffic, Connecticut Radio Network, and News 8's Dr. Mel is our meterologist. Often you will see us out covering local stories with local reporters. With our full and part-time news staff we offer decades of journalism experience.

We love news.

Now if it were possible to have a stronger signal? I barely get any of the station here in New Britain's south end.

Question, is WQUN's studio located on the Quinnipiac campus or somewhere near it? Saw pictures of the inside of the studios at the Hartford Radio history website...sweet setup.

I forget where but not on the College campus. On a main road north/south in the area. (hmmm..look up their address ?)

Sometime in the 90's WELI began to lose its direction. Probably because it was no longer owned or operated by people who even knew where New Haven was.

Then there came a series of programmers and general managers who were more concerned with staying employed than producing good radio.

The end result was the end of news as "local" was farmed out to Rochester or Cleveland or god-knows-where.

It is sad to say that a college radio station (WQUN) does a better job of covering local news than many of the commercial stations.

Sensing an opening, WCBS and WINS have started covering more news in Connecticut. If we won't bother covering news in our backyard (and making money off of it) then they will.

R.I.P. WELI....we knew you when you were a radio station with real people working there instead of the current satellite downlink.

That of course says nothing about Vinny Penn. I'm not a big fan of the show but I applaud him for at least trying. He gives it his best and that is a lot more then a lot of others broadcasting during his daypart across the state.
