Well Lazlo and his crew are splitting town.

Regardless of whether you enjoyed his show or not, they are now gone and you can't help but wonder what the future holds for the End. I mean what do you do to turn things around if the plan is to stay the course with the alt format? Phil Manning left and you got some new blood in the PD chair and that didn't work. Veteran APD Jim Keller was shown the door and with this new guy heading to town, there is no chance he'll be coming back. I enjoyed both No Name and Dick Rossetti, but I can't help but think that if there numbers were truly solid, they both would still be employed today. If Harms had solid numbers, he wouldn't have been taken off air for a newbie. You can't say it was because of budgetary cuts, because he still remains on the payroll but in a different capacity.

So what's next? Is the a clear sign that the ends days are now numbered? If you were in the shoes of the new PD, what would you do regarding music and talent to get things heading in the right direction?

One choice, if the rumor is solid about Bonneville possibly/eventually moving 97.3 to a solid A/C --- try to beat them to the punch and do that kind of format first. Would be a good "mix" for Entercom as it clears the KNDD/KISW demographic battle so KISW would win --- and would give them a mainstream audience that KMTT doesn't always attract; and dial position dang close to 106.9....

I could be wrong but I don't think they've mentioned anything about Endfest. I would imagine by now they would be promoting the hell out of it. Did they announce a show but just don't have an info regarding it on their website?

I am not a big fan of format flips but I suspect LLB is correct. Take a look at PPM data out of Houston, Philly, NY, SF and anywhere else today. KRWM will be attacked, and soon, with Soft AC performing so well in all these markets. PPM seems to favor office listening at first glance. The END might be making a smart move going there first. KQMV may shift AC to protect sister station KRWM. It would also be an fairly easy shift for KBSG. KPLZ could also slowly move that direction and may already be on that track. I heard Michael Buble and soft Journey tracks this weekend. I wonder if Sandusky might bring back KLSY (eliminating KQMV) to flank KRWM and fend off any attack. KBKS is another contender. They have had one good trend, but the four book is miserable and sales are way, way down from two years ago.

My thinking is it will come down to sales. END business is off, but KBSG is off worse. KQMV and KBKS are next worst. KJR is not selling well either. Don't count on a top ten biller to change AC which rules out KMPS, KZOK, KMTT, KUBE, KOMO, KIRO, KPLZ, KKWF. KRWM is a top three biller and could reach number one with the PPM. Follow the dollars and you will discover the format change. The other beauty of the Soft AC format is that it is cheap to run. Entercom, with its ugly stock price, may like a cheap format like Soft AC. Follow the dollars people. I hate to say it but it is more about sales right now than anything else.

I always thought Lazlo caught too much flack on this board. But I concur he should have been in mornings rather than afternoons. Obviously he is a valued asset to Entercom, hence why they are bringing him back to KC. I think it was just a mismatch in general from the beginning.

As far as The End. I dont know if not hearing about Endfest is a red flag as far as their future. Its been a terrible year for revenue, I could easily see Entercom not doing the show for cash reasons. But, unless they bill I would put them on the list of 'possible flips' in the future. With KISW and The End cutting eachother's throats, I could see them putting on something to combo sell with The Wolf.

Just my thoughts.

"took too much flack"?, he created the flack by constantly belly-aching about how much he hated, didn't understand and didn't want to understand the area!,and that's as compelling as it got.re:rosetti,no name and harms #'s,i don't think any one of those 3 put together did worse than laslo.the real shame is the way they let him tank the whole station.

If Lazlo did in fact complain about the city and station, then by all means, your in the right. I never heard that, but I wasnt a P1 either. What I did hear was funny, although lenghty, talk breaks.

Proving why once again ALL PD'S SHOULD BE OFF THE AIR. If he came off like he wasnt clicking with the market, an outside perspective (aka THE OFF AIR PD) could have told him that.

So, was this ever announced anywhere or was the original post just speculation? Lazlo is still on the air today, he isn't off of the website.....

I dont know about that... I've heard some GOOD stuff from air PD's

Eric Powers has a solid Afternoon show
Maynard has a pretty good mid day show

Other markets have some GREAT air PD's as well...

Im sorry, but i have to disagree with that statement

Here's the official press release as an email

Subject: Church of Lazlo

Yesterday we announced to The End staff that Lazlo, Afentra and Slimfast would be exiting the station. The last Church of Lazlo show will air on 7/25. Lazlo will remain in command on the 15th floor until August 1st. Mike Kaplan joins us on 8.4 and takes over the controls of KNDD, and one of his first duties will be finding the next host for afternoons on The End. In the interim Harms will fill in.

Please join me in wishing Lazlo, Afentra and Slimfest the very best in their next challenge (and if you ask real nice I’m sure they’ll tell you what that challenge is). They’ve been a big part of The End and Entercom Seattle for the last 2 years, and certainly will be missed.

Wasn't it Dave who announced 2 weeks ago that Lazlo was being demoted so he can focus on the bright future the Church would have at the End? Why the sudden change? He finished that interview in the PI by saying they are sticking with the alt format, so I'll be anxious to see if that holds true.

How about Robin & Maynard for PM drive?

That's an OUTSTANDING idea! Let's get two people whose combined age is quadruple that of The End's target audience. ::)

There ARE other shows out there, you know.

Either TU was just joking (which I hope he was because isn't Robin like 70 now?) or maybe it is time to change the end's target audience and start skewing older. The path to mediocrity they've been on over the last few years can't be solely blamed on the jocks. I think their focus on newer music has played a big part in this decline.

  • Skew the music older
  • hire Robin and Maynard for PM Drive
  • Let them CUT LOOSE!
  • Leave Corolla in the Morning Drive

Now your talking Rock. Bring back some of the older music and get some veteran seattle jocks in that studio. Hopefully Dave is reading this and has John Maynard's phone number.

looking back at it,what exactly did laslo do to help that staion over the last 2 years?he killed off the big 4 no name, rosetti, keller, harms(on air)and for what?where do i get this kind of job where you can move up by failing?how do i do this?, andi'm assuming he was pulling six figures?
so,is it common place in radio to not suck it up and plead temporary insanity and go back to the well of ex-talent?and what about these market tests,do they still do them-i remeber thee end doing one what seems like years ago now.would any of them return or will they expunge the whole chicken shack?

Aside from the age issue, there's also the inconvenient truth that Robin SUED ENTERCOM a few years ago. I bet they haven't forgotten about it.
