Well, That Didn't Take Long: Letterman Resumes Beating Leno*

Yes, there is no question the first weeks ratings are meaningless. This week may even be. April/May will be the real evaluation.

BTW, I agree with others including Kent Brockman, they need the smaller more intimate studio back, a little more energy, and bring back the old theme as fast as they can!
 
I watched Jay for a half hour on his first night back. That is all I needed to see. I've rediscovered Letterman and I am very happy with watching him now. Then Craig at 12:35. NBC used to be the only one for Late Nights. But now their whole Late Night lineup just blows. Fallon and carson Daly are even worse than Leno.

This marks the first time “Nightline” outperformed “The Tonight Show” among Total Viewers for a February sweep since 1995.

Honestly, my interest in Leno's 2nd Tonight Show is starting to wane a bit. Like I've said before, I watched Letterman regularly until a few years ago when I got burnout on his type of humor. I think I may switch back to Letterman, at least until Conan comes back on the air. I hope Conan's new show isn't going to be like his Late Night show from the last few years he hosted it. In my opinion, those years Late Night was on cruise control and lacked that magic it had before Conan learn he was getting the Tonight Show. That's why I switch over to CBS when Craig Ferguson took over the Late Late Show.

As for the other late night hosts, I don't like Fallon because of the way he was in his SNL days. I can't stand Carson Daly because of his past association with MTV on their TRL show. And finally, Jimmy Kimmel was great on Win Ben Stein's money, but later on I got sick of him.

I look at it this way - less time in front of the boob-tube is good for me. I won't be watching Leno or Letterman. I've never been a fan of Jay's humor, and Dave started boring me about 5 years ago.

It's interesting that you say Conan's Late Night show was on "cruise control" - I hadn't been watching Conan for a number of years, until the Tonight Show. I'd assumed that he had to tone down the humor for the Tonight Show's more mainstream audience, but perhaps the fall-off happened earlier.

If Conan does come back to late night, and expects to get ratings, he'd better step up his game. If not, he'll end up being a 2 time loser. Actually, I've checked Kimmel out a few times lately and I do find him funny. But I think I'll just stop watching late night TV, and put more time into book reading.
 
The ratings will follow quality here...Lettermen's in top form lately and so is Jimmy Kimmel, imo. The comedy writing is superior on these 2 shows, and Dave and Jimmy have by far the most natural fun interviewing at the desk. Craig is so good right now that I worry he's peaking. I don't mind Leno too much...when I'm in the mood for more lame jokes about Congress I'll tune in. As for Conan, don't expect any new show...I think that ship has passed. No network is going to invest in someone who bombed so spectacularly. Certainly not Fox...they remember Chevy Chase.
 
The car wreck effect... people slow down to see a wreck ... then speed up and go about their business. I expected folks to tune in and see the return. They did and saw the same old crap and that chin and decided why did I care in the first place. Leno sucks and will always suck.
