Well, that was weird...

Today, just before Noon, the entire Cox building went off the air. All the radio and the TV station. As of this writing WSB TV is still off.

Just hear on a WSB news cast it was a power surge. I recall once a "surge" actually loss of one phase of 2 phase circuit 240 "fooled" the ac power disruption circuit on the generator which "saw" 120 volts and would not kick the generator on. Every other light fixture was out. The AC tripped. The STL unit was on the 120 leg that did not work. The control board and satellite receivers stayed on. Had to go down to the basement and manually had to close the main breaker to allow the generator to come on.

It was just weird how Boortz's computer link to Naples went down long before the station(s) went off the air. Coincidence I guess.

I belive Boortz said once it was Windows 3.1. :p

Most gensets monitor all 3 phases, and light off if any of them falls out of the preset tolerance for voltage, and frequency. They require good power for a preset time before they will switch back to commercial power. It seems to me an hour or two of TV being off would buy that sort of transfer system.

Unless someone lets the battery on the genset die.

Hello friends. For the record, we run Windows 7. It was weird. In an instant everything failed. Not only the TV and 5 radio stations, but also the phones, computers, etc. Our ENG team had the radio stations on within 10-12 minutes. TV took a little longer.

I suspect Neil was joking and I was joking about Windows 98.. :)
(I work in IT. Our sense of humor is a little bent)
Windows 7 has been very good for us at work.

As to what happened, I'll leave that up to those in the know.
