in response to the post regarding the raleigh/greensboro board being a dead board. yes, i am guilty of being a viewer but not a contributor. however there are plenty of things to talk about in this market. let's start by talking about the once dominant wtqr. from what i see and hear there's alot of shakeup going on there. theres the morning show which absolutly is horrible. now aunt eloise appears to be "sick." is this the way there "killing" eloise from the show?

wmag. still steady but still very lame clear channel cookie cutter "these are the safe songs" radio station.

wkzl. geez, can this station sound any more lethargic? murphy can only hold you for so long and i think that time has come. were talking about wkzl. the heritage wkzl that was huge back in the day.

simon. great station all around. they really have a great playlist of music and play the simon character into the minds of listeners. they do a good job.

buzzard. working on it. much better than before. now if only john boy and billy would go away

qmg. still a mainstay among the african american community and kiss will never come close. you might as well give 1057 back their original signal.

wolf. lowest numbers 12+ since beginning. they're trying. i personally prefer tqr over the wolf. however theyve had a shakeup of their own since giving up their night guy for a syndicated show. i think really lost some credibility there. i don't know who their night guy was but much better than what it is now.

hitz, er excuse me magic. it would be a good station if they only had a good staff and management. station has a lot of potential to be great. but no. good yes. great no.

so now theres a little talk on the board discuss!!discuss!

"I WIN!"

WTQR - "Aunt Eloise" has had real health problems for a couple of years now. Look for permanent retirement this year. It is sad about WTQR - but not so unusual in this day of cookie cutter radio. While they still have some talented people there (many of whom are friends), the station does not have it's old spark! Less visible, less active in the community, and less active on the air! Morning show, God bless them for trying, has been downhill since Big Paul died. Hard to recover from that loss.

WMAG - Agreed!

WOLF - problem comes from revenue - seldom more than one deep buys for country and WTQR has the leg up there. Makes it hard to sustain good, local programming when the $$ aren't there.

BUZZARD - will be better with Marsha Gann. Would love to see a good, in your face, rock and roll, LOCAL morning show on that one.

WKZL - Haven't listened to Murphy in a while. Used to enjoy hearing him do my material the next day (just joking, Murph!)

SIMON - enjoy them once in a while, but I like a more informative morning show on my way to work each day.

here's my $.02 - only KZL and Simon get played on my stereo. Go figure G'Boro 8)

Simon ? - wow there *are* such things as miracles, still no format change? interesting
Buzzard - trying to lean more modern/active rock....slowly; but getting better
KZL - Murphy is still Murphy...dry and boring ::)
Jamz- finding them playing a lot of very popular rythmic tracks that make their way to other rythmic/hip-hop stations weeks or months later. my point: they are on top of their game with the music.

I just found out about the old 732foot 102Jamz tower (ex-WBIG FM) collapse....surprised no one has mentioned it on here.
Any news yet on what caused it?

Simon plays good music, but their morning show is downright painful to listen to -- almost as bad as John Boy & Billy.

Frankly, I'd like to have a station that just plays music in the mornings. If I want to hear talk, I'll switch to 101.1.

Historically, music intensive morning shows just have not worked - and it has been tried in virtually every format!

There is a place that lies in between extensive talk and music intensive. Finding the right "sweet spot" takes time and skill. There are some great radio stations that have found the right formula over the years. Let's face it, a lot of morning personalities think that listeners hang on the every single word they say. Obviously, this isn't so. When it starts to get boring or drift, they're gone.

A good morning show relates to the target demo and doesn't spend time entertaining themselves rather than the audience. There's a LOT of that going on these days.

old jamz tower???...anybody got any details???

The news said the communications company that owned the tower (Jamz sold that tower in the late 80's) was reducing the height from 750 ft to 500 ft and eye witnesses said the workers had come off the tower but it was leaning badly and about an hour later, it collapsed.

Jamz was never on the tower and WBIG was only on it for a few months while the tower at 68 and 220 was built for them. The old WWMO from Reidsville had used that tower before it was sold.

thank you chaser..

i knew 'BIG was on there for a short while.. completely forgot about WWMO

while I'm thinkin' about it....what is the time line for add-on's for the WJMH tower out at 68/220?
102.1 was out there by 1989, right? but what about ex-WMQX (WPAW) and WKZL?

and is 'KZL the only 100kw FM in the GSO market who has a backup facility of their own? I know Dick Broadcasting still owns the short tower in Kernersville off BUS.I40 and it has a 10 bay antenna on it (I believe), and they have an aux. license for it....

just wondering

Oh gosh. Let's see if I can get this right.

WBIG moved from Brown Summit to 68/220 in late 1987, 93.3 in early 1988 and I think WKZL moved there in 1993.

Here's my take on area stations:

93.1 The Wolf: Still holding their own, plus their signal reaches farther east than TQR's.

93.9 Kiss: Still a great station despite having to scramble around for a new morning show after Whoopi got cancelled.

Majic 94.1: Maybe their signal will come in clearer in the Triad now that 93.9 Kiss has moved its signal east.

94.7 QDR: Still the country king in Raleigh, although 106.1 The Rooster is holding its own.

97.1 QMG: Still kickin' butt and takin' names, and their signal is stronger than 105.7 Kiss. CC-G, the time has come to change the format--- keep the Kiss name but change the music.

K97.5: Are they still planning to move to Carrboro and halve their signal? I haven't heard anything new on this.

98.7 Simon: Still hanging around after the station has been a revolving door of formats prior to Simon's inception in 2005.

99.5 WMAG: Still trying to be a blend of what Sunny 93.9 used to be and what 93.9 Kiss is now.

99.9 The Fan: We've come to the "quiet season" as far as sports are concerned, but things will pick up once football season starts.

100.7 The "New" River: Still a far cry from the old 106.1 RDU.

Mix 101.5: Seems to have reverted to their softer side (as in the pre-Sunny 93.9 era) since Sunny morphed into Kiss. In fact, in November they picked up the Delilah affiliation that was a longtime Sunny staple. But come football season, there will also be a Wolf--- or should I say a pack of them?--- howling on this frequency.

102 Jamz: Still a great station despite the spotty signal I get from a lot of the Triad stations here.

Y102.9: Like many oldies stations across the nation, they've revamped their playlist to include '80s hits. For Y102.9, which was '70s/'80s outlet Star FM before switching to oldies in 2005, it was a return to their roots, so to speak.

The Light 103.9 and the two halves of Foxy: You don't hear much about them, but they are quietly holding their own.

G105: The Showgram is getting crazier and crazier, but those guys are what's keeping the ratings up.

my rant is just on one station..cuz everyone else seems to be doing things right

k97.5...IMHO is still a piss-poor programmed urban...but not as bad as WPWZ in rocky mount....I don't need to hear a 4 year old recurrent 3 days in a row at the same time, just looking at the rimshotters and how much jamz and foxy 99 interacts with the community makes you wonder why K97.5 hardly ever even does remotes???...I stumbled upon the WFXC tower in durham about a month ago and there is no sign of anything happening there....can CC raleigh take some notes from CC richmond and CC norfolk....106.5 the beat mopped the floor with Radio Ones WCDX in less than a years time.....4 different urbans have cycled thru norfolk (although 3 were on the same frequency at different times)..but only WOWI survives

Really? I can't pick it up at all. Kat Country pretty much takes care of them. WKBC is also clear a lot of the time.

Probably because it's a revolving door of formats every few minutes.

I heard the instrumentals from Blondie's "Rapture" with Jim Morrison's vocals of "Riders on the Storm". And Debbie Harry's rap from "Rapture" once that was done. This is a very ... interesting ... station.

And just WHO wants to hear that?? That's why the format keeps changing! Are the ratin's in the terlit ?(to borrow a word from Archie Bunker)

of course, there's always the possibility of the Triangle's
audience listening/blogging to/about a radio station.
my son hasn't twisted the dial since 1998.
not even "scan". HD? XM? it's so over.

??? Since I actually started this topic mess, I'll chime in... I actually have resorted to listening to WSJS's Yard Sale on Saturday Morning...I really don't like Jeffrey Griffin's " cute" comments but sometimes you will find something you can use cheap!
