WELS-AM/FM sold

The WELS studios on Queen St in Kinston were beautiful and the Willis crowd trashed it..Its my understanding Curtis is redoing the place which is very cool..If they are going to focus on Kinston they have to have a real Kinston studio and focus on being very live & local..

Allenv, you sound so radical suggesting being "live and local". :)

What's AM-1010 doing, still simulcasting? Still on-the-air? :D

I live on the south end of Winterville and checked this morning... I didn't hear a trace of a carrier on 1010. Granted my car radio doesn't have the best AM section but I should hear SOMETHING if it was on.

That's me Bob.... Mr. Radical!!!! Geez Live & Local..What a novel concept!!!! I must learn to control my wild uneducated impulses... ;D

Allen V is part of a rare breed of broadcasters. I think we were probaly the last generation to appreciate "live & local" radio. Allen, if I win the lottery, I'm buying a station and you will be part of it. We can play thye classics (country, motown...) live & local.

Listening to 102.9 today for a while..The music is not bad at all..The imaging & and some other little things need work....They need to tighten things up some..I'm hearing songs running just about completely out before the next element starts..The imaging is painfully blah..It has no kick to it at all and the sound quality needs work..I'm hearing some cool music but with no personality or excitement at all..Just my two cents. Instead of screaming "here we are"!!! they are waving and whispering "here we are" and you are never to going to get noticed that way and focusing on Kinston alone I don't understand when you reach Lenoir,Wayne Wilson,Greene Johnston & some of Pitt county..What about those folks??? With all that said its too early to really see how it will turn out..Only time will tell.

I stopped in Kinston last October driving back from a vacation in the SOBX, 1010 struck me as being weak even in town. I figure the new owners are either fixing it up or just taking it silent.

I heard someone on the air around lunchtime today. The music is pretty good..I have heard Love Stinks four or 5 times in the last week and a half of listening here and there..I hope they will fill the dayparts with live jocks and some local news and maybe some weekend shows..Always cool to hear a new station which hopefully means jobs for some people looking for work.. Kinston used to be a great radio city..Not so much in the last 5 or 6 years...If Kinston ever gets Baseball back this would be a good signal to be the flagship.

WELS is MIA in my neck of Wilson County. Regardless, Wilson County folk won't listen to anything that doesn't come out Raleigh or Rocky Mount. Maybe if someone put up a 100kw, 2000ft stick in the center of town with a country, beach, hip hop, gospel hybrid??? They'd eat it up. Weird place, Wilson.

1010 is on the air simulcasting the FM now. Sound quality is pretty good.

Driving through Kinston this afternoon AM-1010 is simulcasting the beach oldies format of Greenville's WNCT-AM. The FM has a nice 70's pop leaning classic hits format, no commercials that I heard.

102.9 doesn't sound bad at all musically but it has a long way to go imaging wise and its very voice tracked..It has alot of potential..I would guess its whats left in Goldsboro voice tracking 102.9.. It needs some live presence badly..

10-10 WELS is still doing Gospel. 103 WELS-FM is the one doing oldies or greatest hits or whatever it's called this week. There was a short period of time when WELS was simulcasting its FM sister - during testing, I believe, after they put it back on the air. Like most Curtis Media stations, I think WELS AM & FM are both automated. :(

Any news on the Queen Street facility? I don't really have any reason to go to Kinston so I usually stay away from there unless I'm rolling through (Kinston, we're in the way!) to Greenville or beyond.

That Queen St facility was about as nice as I've ever seen until the Willis crowd absolutely destroyed it..I remember seeing it after they had ruined it and I felt like crying.. Kinston used to be a great radio town and now like so many others it has no live or local presence..Sad...

I was driving back to Maryland from my vacation in Atlantic Beach. My only stop at Kinston was at the Mother Earth Brewery, which may be the only bright spot in boarded-up Kinston. Only other observation on the WELS duo was whoever did the PSA on Gospel 10-10 was also voice-tracking on the FM. I actually did hear commercials this time on both WELS, something I didn't hear driving down.

On my annual vacation drive through the area I heard WELS 1010 on a FM translator at 92.9, great score for the urban gospel station. WELS-FM 102.9 carries on with its unique soul-leaning classic hits format.
