Saw this on R&R:

Davidson Media Buys WEMG/Philadelphia

In the latest in a series of deals the company has made since its recent inception, Davidson enters its largest market thus far by purchasing Tropical WEMG from Mega Communications for $8.75 million. The deal raises Davidson's total station count to 22.

Mega, meanwhile, departs the City of Brotherly Love, leaving the company with a three-station cluster in Washington, a two-station operation in Tampa and a stand-alone in Orlando.

Earlier this month, Davidson picked up Greenville, SC stations WSPA-AM and simulcast WOLI & WOLT from Entercom.

Let the format speculation begin! Liberal talk, real oldies, brokered, religious, keep it tropical? Anyone? Beuller?

Davidson appears to specialize in Spanish-language operations so it may well stay tropical.

What about the price? Sounds a bit rich to this non-expert, unless 1310 covers more of Philly than you might think.

Uh, that's __Bueller__, not Beuller. He won't answer if you spell it wrong.

And I think $8.75m is awful pricey for 1310 too. They aren't a true "graveyarder" and they still drop to 250 watts at night. Even a 1340 operation is usually now 1kw-U.

But what do I know anyhow?

1310 in Camden is a Class C AM on a Class B channel. There were not many of those--another well-known one is 570 in Marinette WI. In the case of Camden (ex-WCAM), its status was the result of the breakup--sometime in the '40s--of a three-way time-share that spanned the state of New Jersey (WCAP Asbury Park, WTNJ Trenton, and WCAM) shared time on 1310. Each ran 500W-S ND-S. All were Class III AMs (now called Class Bs). Immediately after the end of the time-share, WCAP and WCAM became full-time Class IV (now called Class C) stations running 250W-U ND-U on 1310, which was a Class III channel. In those days, Class III stations had to run at least 500W at all times. WTNJ was an even more unusual case, it became a 250W ND daytimer on 1300. 250W daytimers were normally allowed (as Class II-D stations) only on Class I channels (then legitimately known as clear channels). I'm not sure what Class WTNJ was originally assigned to after its move to 1300, but it wasn't long before WTNJ went directional and increased its power to 1 kW-D, making it a legitimate Class III-D.

I'm running out of time and energy so I won't list all of the differences among the technical requirements for the various classes of AMs. Today, there is very little technical difference between Class B and Class C AMs. The biggest difference I can think of is that a Class C is permitted to use an antenna that produces as little as 241 mV/m/kW @ 1 km, whereas a Class B's antenna must produce at least 281.7 mV/m/kW @ 1 km--unless the station has been granted a waiver.

WTNJ never became 1kw-D daytime only, but went from being 250 w non-D under the call sign WAAT, to 5kw 4-tower -D daytime only in 1966

I knew WCAM/WEMG was an out-of-class operation, but I didn't know the whole history.

Thanks guys.

And it's STILL overpriced.

WSPA? God, I hope that doesn't mean the end of yet another heritage radio station.
