WEMP 107.9 (Chocolate 107.9) -- Jacques Torres

Re: WEMP 101.9 (Chocolate 101.9) -- Jacques Torres

Yeah, that is mine. Planning to post more in the foresable future. Thanks for noting me!

The only reason we need to hear or experience any of this debacle, for any short period of time, is to make sure it never happens again.

That operation had to be the most convoluted, mixed up mess I have ever heard, in ANY size market. I still feel bad for those that got sucked into the vortex that was 101.9 FM News/Chocolate/Bad radio for women created by old guys. But a lot of those veterans didn't have to leave 1010 either... the grass always seems greener on the other side of the fence.

"he paddled me"? Huh? Can't picture Jacques Torres himself doing that but even if that was true, why would anyone talk about how fun it was? *cringes* And the funny part is the excuses guys from Merlin make for its failure. I don't know where the article is anymore but I believe Larry Mendte (who worked for sister station IQ in Philly) said that 101.9 FM News was too far ahead of its time, LOL.

I actually got a coupon for free chocolate (box of 4 truffles) from them but never actually listened to 101.9 until they (briefly) revived rock. Jacques Torres chocolate, good. Chocolate News, bad.

107.9?

I liked 101.9 FM New's music format. If they had kept that format, perhaps Merlin might have made a profit on 101.9. I like i101's format in Chicago.

Even worse than the short-lived 2008 David Alan Grier show on Comedy Central?

I agree on the fact that the playlist (if it were slightly expanded) would have been a nice format, as it is almost all 90', with an 80's and 2K song added here or there, Gen X 101.9! I really enjoyed FM New, but the part where the women tell their own weird stories with their child's binky, and obsession with chocolate, added on with the news made it somewhat weird. More airchecks I'll be posting today on my page.

I never watched the David Alan Grier show.

Just like most people never listened to FM News.

Listening to these airchecks is like when the FAA studies all the pieces left over from when a plane crashes and tries to put together how it happened.

I still can't figure out how this got on the air in market #1, never mind market #100. Who thought this was going to work? I knew a couple of the people over there so I kept a lid on it while it was on the air, just out of respect for the talented people that got caught up in this mess. It wasn't their fault. Management, what little there was, changed direction like I change socks. They hired a news director whose prior experience was running the Howard 100 newsroom and reporting on the weight High Pitch Eric's latest dump. Who thought she was a good idea to run a (supposedly) legitimate news operation??

The whole thing, Merlin as a whole, just fascinates me as to how so many people that have been successful before came together and created such a failure. This was their "Howard the Duck" moment, I guess.

The only part where I laughed was when DAG said it's the time of year when kids ask WTF is Kwanzaa. In other words, it mostly bored me. I can see why it only lasted one season but I didn't cringe like I did when I listened to FM news.

And I just noticed the irony of Larry Mendte calling the programming of FM News "a couple years ahead of its time." Well, if the year was 1955, he would be correct.
