WEMP IMPROVES SLIGHTLY, AND WERE'S WCBS 880 ? OUCH

can anyone make sense out of this ? WCBS 880 is now @ # 16 on the NYC radio list, @ 3.0 and their cume drops to 1.785 mill down from 3 mill in September. This is huge!! They never had such low numbers as far i can remember.

In other (better) news, WEMP 101.9 slightly improved from 0.4 to 0.6 , cume up 100,000 to 600,000.

That's why they need to put 1010 wins on fm and put 880 on a translator.....but you are right, ouch!

What a total waste of a frequency. I wish Clear Channel would by them and either simulcast or duplicate the WRFF alternative format they have in Philly (Radio 104.5). They handle alternative better than RXP and are #6 in latest PPM's.

Walter Sabo knows what he's doing with WEMP 101.9 FM Radio. Based on that nice jump in cume, the expected purge of rock listeners is over, let the building phase begin.

Radio is a business, not a hobby.

That was a joke right? Cause a better ending would have been Radio is a business, not a joke.

With MedianJ, I really can't tell if it's a joke anymore. He used to flood the NJ board about WKXW. He is so pro-Walter Sabo, I can't tell if he's fanatical, or just doing it at this point to be annoying.

Either way, you can, in NO WAY, call WEMP a success in any way, shape, or form. The rock listeners were gone in the days after the flip. The little blip on the radar? That's not building. That's basically stagnant.

Yankee season ended, there was no earthquake or hurricane in October, 1010 WINS did a better job covering Occupy Wall Street.

This is the most drastic drop in any station's numbers since PPM began, and worse than anything I can remember seeing in the diary days...the end of the Yankee season has never had this much impact before. It looks so strange it may simply not be real.

I suspect what we have here is a fluke book, driven by quirks in the sampling panel or maybe even a typo in compilation of the numbers. If the December and January numbers show just as big a jump back to a more normal level, you'll know the November book was just wrong when it came to measuring 880. It wouldn't even be shocking to see an amended book issued.

CBS-FM did jump a little, but it's not a matter of Arbitron just transposing and mis-attributing some AM numbers and putting them in the FM column, since the CBS-FM move up is within its normal range and keeps it where it's been all along, in contention for the 6+ overall lead.

WEMP up from .4 to .6...even if ALL their listeners were in the critical 25-54 demo, still not enough to make a difference, and make the station profitable.

So, depends on how long Merlin's credit line is as to how long they last. News (FM or AM) is an expensive proposition.

Wonder when the Disney folks will make an offer to take WEPN's 1.5 rating and put it on as ESPN 101.9? Or Merlin takes the FM News to FMTalk 101.9? to a talk format. I still don't see the demand for a 4th news station in New York.

(And, in case you think I just want to pick on Merlin...I don't see CBS' FM news station in DC doing that well against WTOP.)

An angry Libertarian and true Conservative leaning talk format would be a welcomed change from the current talkers that are mouth pieces for the establishment Republicans, Democrats, Neocons and Progressives.

Agreed. That cume bump is within the margin of error. Walt and his girlfriend Randy have bitten off more than they can chew. Chicago too.

By the way KGO is planning to go all news in San Francisco and its competing against KCBS 740/106.9. Does this mean that KGO will have to borrow tactics from WEMP or WINS?

Not statistically significant. It's called a wobble. The building phase began four months ago.

Merlin expected to be on the cusp of competitive by now. A 0.6 is not competitive in New York. In Chicago, Merlin's all news station is still only #35. Both stations are being clobbered by very-high-on-the-dial AM foreign language stations and distant out-of-market stations that don't even do well in their home markets.

There's still lots more to fix before Merlin's FM NEWS stations can have a prayer of succeeding. Many of us would like to see it happen.

Here is today's Radio Quiz....

Question: How do you instantly get a cume of 600,000 people in New Yok????

Answer: Take a station that has a cume of over 2 Million and turn it over to Walter Sabo!!

I've been listening, or really, sampling WEMP again this week. It really does seem like there is a lot more local NYC based news, more reporters on the street and way less Kar-effing-dashian based news. I found the chit-chat between anchors has been reduced, and the pacing of stories faster. All in all, it wasn't a bad 10 minute wrap up of news.

There are still bugs to be worked out for sure. One of them is that the audio processing makes everyone sound like they have a cold. Another is the bad weather bed, and not having a meteorologist on all the time for the weather. That needs to be consistent. The addition of a sports report that's 60 seconds or less would also be good. and schedule it at 25 and 55 because the other stations are at 15 and 45. If anything, it's one more element that can be sponsored.
