Washington Wenatchee

What the latest in Wenatchee?

I think that one of our regulars here (KellyA) said he'd heard that a lot of the stations there were in financial trouble, so who knows?

The state of the radio economy seems to be socking it to stations and markets all over.

Geez, are we the only ones still with a live and local morning show?

Yes, Wenatchee is the only market in all of North America with a live and local morning show….
Well, I'm not in Wenatchee. I was being somewhat facetious, since Alpha has been dropping local talent in numerous markets, including Wenatchee, and Townsquare has apparently been doing so as well.

I have a few stations in Aberdeen, and our flagship AC station has an actual live human in the morning; we also have a three-hour local morning talk show on one of our stations, as well as local and regional news in the morning. Our competition has neither.

The Wenatchee airwaves are basically nothingness. Townsquare has the only full cluster in the valley - Alpha and Bustos are the next two largest but only have partial clusters. Sunny FM is pretty decent though and they do have local talent.

Aside from Sunny FM, Wenatchee basically has country (x2), classic rock, pop, AC, JackFM, various LPFMs and a couple of Spanish-language stations. Oh, and there's that KDRM translator on 107.5. No alternative, no rock, no hip-hop and no classic country; and because of the valley terrain, nothing much comes in from the outside except weak Spokane, Yakima or Moses Lake. Occasionally Tri-Cities comes in, but it's still weak.

Aly (from Connor and Aly) just recently got hired at KKRV per her Facebook post.

I don't even get Yakima from Wenatchee unless I'm above Sunnyslope or on the hills near East Wenatchee, where 96.9 and 107.3 weakly make it. And no KXLE either, which is even closer to Wenatchee. They may put a very weak signal now at Manastash Ridge. But I haven't been to Wenatchee in a year and a half - and now living 300 mi. away I doubt I will return for years.

Anyhow...the only decent *local* radio stations in town are Sunny FM, and KPQ-AM for their local news programming. Sunny serves the community well. I wish they were still on 98.5 instead of K-LOVE.

I wouldn't be surprised if Townsquare goes as far as cutting everyone local from 102.1. They seem to trend towards voicetracking from far-away markets as medium-market radio falls into oblivion. The 99.3 (Mega) in Yakima is a national jukebox. KATS and KXRX air the same songs on weekends and often weekday shifts. In Yakima, 92.9 the Bull is national in the mornings while their competitors at KXDD are local, local, local. John Riggs is the only local guy left.

Hmmm... Alpha is not hiring... could it be... voice-tracking?

I don't think so. From a recent Facebook post, her departure post blew up with people supporting her, and a couple of people from Alpha reached out. She must've been hired shortly after.

There is a new live morning show debuting soon in Wenatchee. Keep yer ears on good buddy. I’ll update ya soon.
