Wendy Corona out at KPRC Local 2

According to www.chron.com, Wendy Corona "laid off" from KPRC Local 2, due to budgetary reasons. Rachel and Dominique to share duties??

Your thoughts?

I'm not buying their story that she was let go for "budgetary reasons." Think about it.

A major market TV station with a multi-million dollar annual payroll wants us to believe it can ease its budget problems by laying off ONE news anchor.

Now I might believe that if Wendy Corona was hauling down half a million a year or more, but she wasn't making anywhere near that much. Or was she?

I don't think so, and I also believe there's more to her firing than what they're saying.

It's so hard to believe Jerome did'nt mention anything about Wendy on the 4:00 afternoon newscast. Another anchor at Local 2, Lauren Freeman is expecting a baby, and It's hard to find any talent out there over at Houston's Crappiest Station. I think they need to promote Rachel Immediately. And I thinl Amy Davis, Courtney Zavala, Joel Eisenbaum, & Elizabeth Scarborough could become Anchors more sooner than later.

There always is a backstory to a firing or a "parting of ways", as many HR/PR folks like to spin these days. Im going to guess it was one of those issues that managment/labor had a fight concerning the way things were handled on/off air.

Lauren has already had her baby, a couple days before Christmas. I'd expect 13 to make some anchor cuts, too. They've got waaaay too many, including folks who only do 1 show.

I hope Wendy would join Lucy Nolan and the rest of The 11 News Team. They need somebody with BOTH Beauty & Brains.

KTRK will not fire anyone. They don't do that unless a contract has expired or there is a gawdawful sex/drug scandal becoming public. As for KPRC, they continue to make great 4th place decisions. Wendy was one of their more professional anchors. It fits right into their modus operandi. She's too good to work there. My guess: others like Dominique became jealous and threatened by seeing talent at an anchor desk and started a stink that blew up in Wendy's face. Until Post Newsweek dismantles that station from top to bottom, they will never be any higher in the ratings than they are now. Look at their 4th place history: It all started when Ron Stone retired and they replaced him with Bill Balleza (major downgrade). Then ND Nancy Shafran took their news to the basement with their ET formatted sensational newscast. Some consultant told them viewers buy that crap when in reality, they don't. Then they promoted the hot morning traffic babe to main late news anchor (Dominique). All the while the revolving door has been spinning at warp speed with reporters and other anchors in and out. Enter Skip Valet as ND. No upgrade from Shafran. Fire their only quality sports anchor (weekend guy Steve Mark) and replace him with a guy that can't read a promptor, nor pronounce words and freaky looking guy with a lisp. Follow with a good decision made bad by taking benched anchor Khambrel Marshall and making him a weekend weather anchor. If you thought he was train wreck as a news anchor, then he is the Titanic of weathercasting. I predict their next bonehead decision will be to promote current morning traffic hottie and Hawaiian Tropic Swimsuit Champion Jen Reyna to anchor. Someday someone at Post Newsweek will come to the realization that jounalistically talentless anchors with large breasts and sumptuous smiles make for 4th place ratings and nothing higher. The powers that be at KPRC appear to be running that station as if they are a new sign-on with a new news operation. There is a large base of Houstonians that do remember when KPRC was a top-drawer news station with quality anchors in all depts (news, weather and sports). Perhaps they should look at consulting with media savvy professionals that really know the Houston market instead of the overpaid consulting services they currently use. I have a very smart collie more capable of making better decisions than that group currently running KPRC.

Are you talking about Chris Wragge? It's hard to believe he made a stop in Houston before going home to the NYC Tri-State area. According to you he's the male Katie Couric--somehow this no talent guy was able to catch a ticket back home for a high-profile anchor job (the evening anchor position) on the network flagship station and subsequently the weekend anchor-host of the network morning show.

Hey no fair--that's obviously not true for the anchor guys. What a sexist comment! ;) They don't have large breasts but sumptuous (fake) smiles that make for 4th place can apply to any sex.

It reminds me of an anecdote about how the Democratic Party kept losing elections to overpaid, experienced (in losing) consultants--the ilk of James Carville and Paul Begala. The reason Obama won was that he didn't use those overpaid consultants who kept losing (how many?) elections to the Republicans. Even the Republicans were astonished at the million-dollar fees these people conned out of the party. (The Republicans lost because their usual ones were already taken by the Democrats and were left with the said overpaid consultants who make millions losing elections.:))

Actually, I was not at all referring to Wragge. He's entertaining. I was referring to the post Wragge era (knowing that a KPRC era equals about a year). Randy McElvoy is ok, but Steve Mark (the weekend anchor for years) was the only real journalist they had in the sports dept. I'm referring to replacing Mark with the African American guy and the tall goofy looking guy. Can't remember their names. The AA guy is the son of a famous Dallas Cowboy defensive player.

As for the "sexist" remark: you bet I was making a sexist remark because it's obvious that is what KPRC goes for. It may be sexist, but it is painfully obvious and there's no need to be politically correct. This is a blog site. Political correctness is out the door.

The consultant remark is another obvious KPRC fohpah. Whereas the people meters have been kind to them compared to younger skewing stations they are still firmly planted in 3rd or 4th place in all key demos and have been for years. Everyone knows they rely heavily on consultants for putting them in that position. They are not alone. KRIV has utilized consultants in past few years and it has not been beneficial to them. As I previously posted, these stations should conduct their own research with consultants who have been in the market for years and know it well. The problem with KPRC and KRIV is that they are run by GMs that are not native to the market nor have been in it at all before they came here. These GMs are relying on any success they may have had at other stations in other markets. The mistakes TV stations make all over the country is that they assume what works for one market will automatically work in another. Most of this country's TV markets are unique and need to be programmed to the unique market characteristics and demands. In Houston, KTRK has done that beautifully for over 30 years. There's no magic secret, just common sense, which most of this markets TV stations lack.
