Over the past month I have seen Wendy Malick doing a car rental advertisement and a great spot for ASPCA, how an intelligent well spoken actress could
let herself be portrayed in such an idiotic manner in Hot in Cleveland is beyond me. Had I not seen these spots I would have never realized that there was a quality actress behind the insipid dialog and mannerisms of this show.
 
In the 90s and 00s, Malick specialized in self-centered 'cougar' type mature women with sharp tongues. I usually enjoyed her roles, though I was not a fan of Just Shoot Me, probably her biggest continuing role to date.

She's obviously a smart woman and versatile actor, but even though she still looks great, at her age (61), she probably can't be as picky as she'd like about what roles come her way.

IMO - Hot in Cleveland is awful. So you have to ask what any of those good female actors (Betty White, Jane Leeves) are doing. My guess is - they're doing it for the paycheck. Bertinelli is a little different - other than the Weight Watchers gig, her career hasn't exactly been busy since One Day At a Time in the 80s, except for the occasional guest-star role.
 
I'll take Wendie Malick in those PSA's over Sarah MacLachlan any day.

Arguably, with shows like "30 Rock", "Parks and Recreation", "Up All Night" and "New Girl"- there has never been a better time to be a intelligent, well spoken actress on television. Note these are all largely shows based on the premise of a single woman trying to have it all (career, family, love), which is certainly a hot topic in these post-feminist times.

True, as many of the women in comedy who gain a foothold in the sitcom/tv comedy world tend to be involved in the writing/producting/directing sides of their respective shows, so they've already "made it" in a sense.

I'd say the horrible stereotype of the fat, blubbering, idiot husband/boyfriend that seems to have infected tv comedy is equally as bad- but at least it provides jobs for the actors.
