Birmingham WENN and 92.3 W222BK Birmingham sold

$80,000 for an AM and a translator that aren't paired and aren't on the air. But I bet it won't be long till they are paired and are on the air. I sure hope they have an idea for the translator; where it is now it serves virtually no one of consequence. It's just a tiny signal in a valley in Shelby County, ha ha.

I am sure they have a plan. Translators with directional antennas have been 'shoehorned' in lot of places. Plus the translator could be moved to another market somewhere else. $80.000 might be cheap

A few years ago, SummitMedia did have a construction permit to move W222BK to Birmingham on the same 92.3 frequency (see below). It was directional and didn't have much coverage area. The FCC canceled the permit as it was never built out.

Maybe another application wil be filed to move W222BK back to Birmingham?

And theres a part of the sales contract that says they cant do certain formats, ones that would compete with summit formatted stations.

There's mention of "the following planned post closing buyer formats".. oldies and southern gospel are ok to do.

The snowclan.com domain the buyers are using doesnt go anywhere.. and i found some stuff tying it to some cat stuff.

BUT when i google the phone number, i get one hit on the FCC database not related to the current sale, Mark Snow listed as the consulting engineer for W262DI.

Marks address on the WENN app wont resolve on Google, but the address is different for him on W262DI and its a Pelham address thats a house.

Marks email on the W262DI app is different, bbpsales.com

I wonder if this thing gets moved out of the Birmingham market. Who else could use a translator in Montgomery, Mobile, Huntsville, or (fill in the blank).

That was only a possibility during two windows that were open in 2017 and 2018 for brief periods. It has not been allowed since.
How far can you move a FM translator for an AM? Does the translator have to have some kind of signal in the COL of the translator?

As a secondary service, translators don't have any COL coverage requirements - it's just a line on the application that has to be filled out.

Generally, a translator can only be moved as a "minor change" now, which means the 60 dBu of the new facility has to have at least a smidge of overlap with the existing facility.

There are some exceptions, but they're complex and best handled by an expert consultant. (Hi there!)

Does anyone know if Summit Media retained the WENN call sign or if it was transferred to Snow? I skimmed over the sales contract and I didn't see any info regarding Summit Media exempting the call sign from the sale. I'm lazy to read the whole contract, though. lol

I figured given the heritage of the WENN call sign that Summit Media might want to retain it and park the call letters on another one of their stations until a later time. After all, they had to grab the WENN call sign back in 2009 after Iheart Media had it in their possession for many years

Ah, that name is familiar. I've seen it listed as the consulting engineer on translators in the past, mostly ones licensed to or located in Pelham. IIRC there may have also been an LPFM grant under his name that was never built out.
Mark Snow held the license for W276BQ at 103.1 (now "103.1 The Vulcan") before selling it to Red Mountain Broadcasting (the Reynolds?) many years ago. Or is Red Mountain Broadcasting and Mark Snow one and the same essentially? The address on the FCC record for W276BQ is a Pelham address...

One and the same

Mark Snow is listed on the W276BQ/Red Mountain LMS FCC file and with the state as a member of Red mountain.

The address and phone number for Red mountain is the same as Snowclan

The address is a house.
