WENN off the air… again

If you're referring to 1320 AM, consider that in the last 3 years it has been Spanish, black-oriented talk, classic country, and a simulcast of an FM ... have they stayed with any of those formats for as much as a year? I don't think so.

I got word that WENN has been off the air since around the start of November. Anyone know what's going on? The AM side seems to be spending more time off air than on.

WENN has been off for about a week now. I guess they decided to join WAYE, which has been silent for more than 3 months.
Cox continues to operate the "WENN-FM" translator, minus the AM.

On the subject of WAYE being off the air: Broadcasting & Cable magazine is running a For-Sale-By-Owner (No brokers) ad listing WAYE ($700,000), plus WGRM A/F Greenwood Ms ($1.5M), and stations in Atlanta, Kinston NC, and Edenton NC. These are stations in Bishop Levi Willis's portfolio.

I had brief negotiations in 1991 to sell my Mobile station to him ... he's quite a character, and has had his problems with FCC rule compliance over the years.

I sold my station in 1992 and have been on the sidelines since, but I cannot imagine $700K for a 1 kw daytimer in Bham that is off the air... and I'm quite familiar with Greenwood MS since that's my mother's hometown ... and $1.5 for that combo requires a lot of imagination.

L.E. Willis Sr. passed away in 2009. I have been told that his son L.E. Willis Jr. is in charge of Willis Broadcasting. You are right about the asking prices - I have a feeling they will be on the market for a long time at those asking prices.

Sec. 74.1263(b)

An FM booster or FM translator station rebroadcasting the signal of an AM or FM primary station shall not be permitted to radiate during extended periods when signals of the primary station are not being retransmitted. Notwithstanding the foregoing, FM translators rebroadcasting Class D AM stations may continue to operate during nighttime hours only if the AM station has operated within the last 24 hours.

Considering how nonexistent the enforcement is on that, I'm not surprised they've ditched the AM.

When I lived in Grenada, Mississippi, a low budget religious outlet's parent station on 94.5 failed and went dark. Our translator routinely picked up WJOX out of B'ham every morning rather than going off the air as required. That was one of many examples of dead or other unwanted signals being broadcast by translators that no one seemed to care about.

I have heard that the asking price for WAYE has been even higher than $700K at one point...possibly as high as $775K. They are living in "fantasyland" if Wills believes they'll get that kind of money for WAYE. I figure that either the IRS will get a hold of them for the untold amounts of delinquent witholding taxes they owe, or the creditors will force the station into bankruptcy before Willis finds a buyer.
