WEOK and WALL to drop Radio Disney

Maybe they'll flip to a 24-hour simulcast of Cable 6, or whatever the local news channel is there...

Seriously, what else can you do with an AM radio station, outside of right-wing talk, sports talk and Radio Disney?

OH, have you not heard? It was my understanding that everyone had heard.

Of course this is just speculation at this point, but it makes some sense. I am surprised WEOK / WALL stuck with Disney this long. It has never even been a blip in the ratings. Another thread suggests the True Oldies Channel will be back in the Mid Hudson Valley within a few days; this time on AM . IF that is true WEOK is the only station that would make sense. To bad in addition to the usual AM problems they have a near total east-west null at night. 1390 WEOK barely makes it to Pleasant Valley after sundown.

WEOK should have kept the AM only format they dropped in 1999. They have done absolutely nothing since. While you may argue today it would be even less of a small piece, a lot less of not much of something is still better than nothing at all.

Sorry, I sort of like Chick Watkins in the afternoon.

This is true. I have been racking my brain to remember what it was.

WALL-WEOK still Disney on their stream..this indicates they were never locally streaming there, my guess is they are streaming the network feed.

Is a stunt necessary?

So you dump out of Radio Disney, blow off all of those listeners by stunting with The Bird and then slide into True Oldies Channel? This isn't a transition from classical into heavy metal.... We all know that Radio Disney not only had a very young audience, but often had parents listening, too. Surely Pendell Rd knew this, considering the number of Cupid.com spots they ran on Radio Disney.... I mean, they wouldn't be targeting the kids with that spot, would they?
Wouldn't it have been better to just go from RD into TOC, and capture those adult listeners?
Just a thought....

That's right! AM is an older demographic band to begin with and it would bring older listeners to AM. This is where the True Oldies Channel is heading towards an older audience. 95.7 did the True Oldies thing when it was simulcast on WPLJ's HD2 channel for a period of time. But now, the True Oldies Channel is targeting an older audience.

As for Radio Disney, too bad! This station has been on since 2004 or 2005. First, WEOK dumped the adult standards format from WW1 with Chick Watkins when it was previously heard on WMTR and WCKL along with a Sunday morning show called "The Sounds of Sinatra" with Sid Mark playing nothing but Sinatra. That was from 1999 where they flipped to a news/talk format known as "News/Talk 13" and it was short lived back in 2000 until it went to an all-sports station known as "ESPN Radio" and it lasted until 2003 where they pulled the plug on sports until it went to a Spanish station known as "El Ritmo". That station went nowhere with no listeners hearing Spanish music. And finally, it went to Radio Disney and it got no ratings for over the last 5 years.

Radio Disney is a teeny bopper radio station and it has no listeners to hear this format. Kids and teenagers doesn't like AM either, so they can go with FM. Look at 1560 AM in New York City right now, they still have Radio Disney on and it is still a 50 kw skywave station than WWKB in Buffalo still has a skywave signal at night.

What's next? We shall see if any other Cumulus stations including WKXP and WZAD will consider to be a candidate for a format flip from country to Radio Disney and put "The Wolf" on WPDH's HD2 channel. According to the fall ratings book that ""The Wolf" had a 2.4, it is still a good station. If "The Wolf" dies, they should bring some listeners to WRWD with CJ and friends in the morning. Let hope if Radio Disney should end up on FM soon. FM is a younger demographic band.

I don't know what's going to happen to Radio Disney, it will be on FM. That's my 2 cents.

I like the idea of hearing "SUrfing Bird" 24/7...

The question is: Are they better off going head-to-head vs. a more powerful WGNY-AM for the oldies audience? It might have been an easier bet when Manglass was on rather than the better presentation of Van Richie (sp?)...

Maybe WALL-WEOK should have thought about giving regional news-talk another try with better syndicated shows mixed in. A solid mix of local and national might rejuvinate the frequencies.
When they tried the ill-fated "Newstalk 13" idea before Disney/ESPN Radio, the problems were based more in the presentation than the syndicated lineup. They probably could have found a better morning talk host or a decent mid-day guy.

I am not picking on WEOK or their selection of Surfing Bird to stunt with .I know Stunting is a common practice when a station flips formats. My question is why not just do something briefly to introduce your new format and then go with it. Who is going to listen to the same thing over and over? Yes it will create a buzz , I guess , but so will a new format .Listeners aren’t going to listen to the same thing , coming up on 24 hours now to see what is about to happen .
As far as The True Oldies Channel coming to AM, I think it is a good move. Although AM sucks, and I won’t be able to listen on my way home at night, it’s better than nothing.
