WEOL takes their entire news department part-time due to the economy...

Elyria talker WEOL/930's news department has been just about obliterated. Due to the faltering economy.

Veteran newscaster Larry Wright, who had been with WEOL since early 2000, was let go by owner Elyria-Lorain last Friday. And that's just the beginning:

All of their newscasts now outside of the morning-drive hours are VT'ed by news director/operations manager Craig Adams. And he was just downgraded to part-time status... along with the entire news department (Craig, Colleen O' Neill and weekender Jared Kozar - assuming he's still there).

Morning host Les Sekely was also downgraded to part-time, but he keeps his local show... for now. That apparently leaves assistant OM Bruce Van Dyke as the sole full-time employee at the station.

This is not good.

Yeah, it sucks. I figured the economy would get to us, eventually. I feel bad for Larry, and Craig, and especially Bruce. My hours have been cut down, as well, but I do other work besides radio, which is a good thing-because of all the downturns, it looks like I'll NEVER get an airshift, now...Oh, well.

It was manufacturing's turn in the '80s and '90s-now, it's EVERYBODY ELSE'S turn to get screwed up.

Was this the same Larry WRight that worked in Columbus in the 70's?

I'm pretty sure that's the same one. Larry's been around the radio dial quite a bit; including a station or two in Cleveland. His tenure at WEOL is rather astounding as a result.

And think of it this way, too: WEOL's news alum also includes:

*Neil Zurcker (late 60's ND; formerly with WJW/8; retired)
*Sandy Kozel (now with AP Radio)
*Chip Kullick (late 80's/early 90's ND; now with WMJI/CC)
*Tracey Koczynski (formerly with WMJI/CC)
*Laurie Hovater (WMJI/WGAR/CC)
*Harold Mester (later with WTAM, and over to CC/Milwaukee; now working for the City of Miwaukee, IIRC)
*Dave DeNatalie (briefly after WEOL dropped music programming; formerly with WOBL/WDLW; now with Metro/WKNR... for now)
*Julie Courtright (Ken's daughter; formerly with WOBL/WDLW)
*Chris Coleman (now with Metro/WHK... for now)

And that's just the NEWS department. That's why this is very sad.
