Were there any injuries?

Was anybody hurt in the train wreck that was the DRC morning show this morning? I have never heard a live broadcast that was such a horrific combination of dead air, lack of communication and total clueless-ness (?) as I did this morning. Between 7:10-7:20 they throw it to Scott Haney for the weather update. Marianne states that since she’s not sure if Scott can hear her and John, there wouldn’t be the usual (ridiculous) banter. So here goes Scott with the weather and sure enough, they can’t hear him. So, instead of trusting that he was there, or getting any word from the board op back in the studio or even anyone on location monitoring the station, Marianne steps on Scott’s cast with “Scott, Scott, are you there Scott? Scott?” He stops to answer her, she can’t hear, he realizes this so he starts again….Now he’s done and its’ “Back to you John & Marianne” And………NOTHING!!! They had no clue he was done and threw it back to them.. Obviously no one gave them a heads up that they were again on air. Board op dude back in the studio let’s em hang for 5, 10, …..15 seconds!!! Finally board op specialist hits the 10-second Sleepys sponsor spot. Then?…More dead air..5 more seconds before he wakes up and hits the next spot…It was painful to listen to. If that were the end of it, you could chalk it up to “Sh*t happens”. Unfortunately the same scenario played out again at 8:20 with traffic chic Gina Mitchell (Although this time she just wasn’t there) …So here we go again…Dead air? Dead air? Anyone? Bueller ? Did someone request dead air? Was the board op just standing there with his “mic” in his hand with no clue what to do? Was he ever in contact with John and Marianne? Couldn’t they hear the station in their headphones? Just incredibly poor execution… I did feel bad for board op'er, he must have felt like dog poop. I know we’ve all had our bad moments on air, but this was above and beyond just bad…it was …….CRAPTACULAR!!!!

That is the Typical live broadcast for DRC, Always a mess. I was tuned in to hear the break that you're speaking off. Actually that break is indicitive of the show. To add to the mix, and show the cluelessness ( as you pointed out) I'm pretty sure that Dave Nagel, the PD board ops those shows. I've never heard a live broadcast with so little listener interest. It sounds like they just dropped these two bumbling fools in the middle of a diner with no build up, and no one knew about it or cares. Not that it stops Caddy from trying his best to mingle with the crowd. Nothing says professional radio announcer better than a morning jock who stops his break to thank the patrons as they leave the restaurant. By the way I think Caddy man should change his name to reflect his habit of running over any person who tries to interject a thought into his show. Wondering if Ford Tundra Seville would work. And poor marianne. Its obvious that she is just keeping the co-host seat warm until Beth comes back. Just look at the web site bio's. Mariannes bio spot is occupied by Beths monhly health update. Its too bad, prior to her being Johns latest Sycophant, she had some radio creditbility. The show, whether on the road ruining the breakfast of people who would rather you shut up and leave, or in studio is just painful to listen too. Zero chemistry, just bad radio.

Wow, good catch marc. I wonder if that just confirms that Beth's health woes won't allow her to return. I also see the ad for a P/T announcer. Is there a weekend shift currently open?

Actually, it was Grahame Winters (promotions director/weekend jock) board opping this week. Saville acknowledged her at the end of the show -- I only caught the final half hour, so I missed the trainwrecks referenced in this thread entirely.

Meanwhile, DRC-FM continues to improve in the 12+ numbers book after book. I wonder if this is just the 55+ crowd trickling back after Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis and Chuck Berry were reinstated to the playlist following the "Big Hits" debacle of fall '05/winter '06, or whether the current music mix is actually attracting new listeners.

I see via the rankings at yes.com that the station is still cycling through 900 to 1,000 songs in an average week, which is a lot for a classic hits station; however most of the more obscure tracks seem to get played only on the weekend request shows and Mike Stevens' weeknight shift. Otherwise, the music mix is definitely more focused than it was a year ago, although if a complete newcomer to the music of the '60s and '70s were to listen to DRC for a month or two, he's probably come to the conclusion, based on airplay, that Tommy James' biggest hit was "Sweet Cherry Wine" rather than "Crimson and Clover," and that "All I Need" was a bigger hit for the Temptations than "My Girl."

What ever happened to the days when the people on the air would hear a direct feed from on the air?

Keep in mind, with the advent of HD Radio the off-air signal is now delays approx. 8 seconds to match the delay on the HD channel, so direct listening off the air is no longer feasible for a remote. Most stations now use some sort of IFB. I know one station that actually used their SCA subcarrier to give the talent their cues and it worked great.

Is this why WTIC-AM Hartford, WBZ-AM Boston and WCBS-AM New York City always sound their hourly chime at around :00:08? WINS-AM 1010 of New York City still hits theirs at exactly :00:00.

It very well is the reason. I thought WINS was in HD as well, but I could be mistaken. Since I don't own an HD box yet I have to get somebody to confirm that.

Kevin

The WTIC TimeTone does NOT air late, it occurs exactly at the TOH.

I stand corrected, but the one one they use now sounds awful. :(

I listened Friday...For the first time..I thought the morning show was pretty good. Did I catch 'em on a good day or do they only stink when on remote?
Just curious.
